Family Fun Factor?

You would think Lake Constance was made for families! As there are number of children's bikes and trailer options available for rent,  this trip is suitable for toddlers upwards. If your children are old enough to ride solo, they don’t have to been on a cycling holiday before but going out and being able to ride the distances will help your family enjoy the trip so much more. The route is planned around quiet roads, dedicated cycle lanes and some natural paths. The distances are fairly short but there are plenty of museums, lakeside beaches and delicious ice-cream parlours to break up each day of cycling. On the longer days of cycling, there is always the option to hop on a train and reduce some of the distance.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as this trip is extremely popular especially during peak season from July to August.

When is the best time of year to go?

Spring at Lake Constance is from around May to June. Flowers quickly blossom and timbered houses over spill with colourful flower boxes. July and August is the best of the weather but can be busy. September is just in time for end of the wine season and can also have superb weather without the crowds.

What personal equipment do I need?

You will need comfortable sports shoes, comfortable clothes for cycling, waterproof jacket and trousers, a helmet and a sunhat. We supply a detailed packing list with your information pack.

Brilliant family holiday

Lake Constance is a lovely family-friendly place to visit - the lake is shallow near the shore and you can swim in it nearly anywhere along the route. You cycle through fruit orchards and villages, sometimes with views of the alps. There are bike paths all over the place as it's pretty flat and you have to have your wits about you following the map some of the time as you sometimes need to go through a town on a local road or you get a choice of cycle route signs to follow. Traffic is far more cycle-friendly than in the UK so, although taking my 8 year old on the road was a little hair raising, drivers were patient. All but one of the hotels on the route were delightful: big rooms; nice breakfasts; lovely staff, but you will need at least a smattering of German and you can't assume enveryone speaks English. The bikes provided are sturdy and sensible, with a side pannier and front carrier provided which means that the map is always in view. Radweg Reisen (the company that organises it all) send you a great little booklet which details your route stages and hotels and well as including vouchers to get into some of the attractions and the two ferry trips that are included. It's all really well organised and everyone we met was absolutely lovely. We are a totally ordinary family (not fit!) with kids aged 8&9 and we all made it the 100 miles in 5 days. I highly recommend it as an antidote to boring beach holidays.

Fabulous family cycle trip

Brilliant trip for families or those trying a cycle trip for the first time. The rides aren't too long and give plenty of opportunity to sight-see, not just racing from A to B. The ferry rides provided a chance to watch the scenery go by. Make sure you stop and take the cable car up Pfander mountain for views across the lake showing where you've cycled and the next route. My husband enjoyed this trip even more than the family cycle along the Danube last year. There are plenty of official swimming spots and unofficial ones around the lake which is fantastic for a cooling dip. As always Macs Adventure, along with their local agent, have all the hotels and luggage transfers well organised. The cycle path is well signposted and good quality. The hire bikes are better than our bikes at home.
