Adventure of the Week - Germany's Romantic Road

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, this week we are focusing on those tours that are suitable for the young lovers, the nature lovers and the happy couples looking to get away. What better way to start than with a trip that brings together western history, art and culture on a walk through the beautiful Bavarian landscape.

In a nutshell

Where?

The full Romantic Road measures around 400km stretching from Würzburg to Füssen. Macs Adventure's shorter, walk-only version of Germany's Romantic Road sees you walking 92 km over the course of five days from the start point in the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber to the finishing point in Noerdlingen. The route passes by a number of central Franconia's medieval and historic towns, through unspoilt river valleys, rolling farmland and ancient woodlands.

Some of the highlights from this week-long walking tour include Dinkelsbuehl, a beautiful town where most of the buildings date from the 15th and 16th centuries, the village of Wilburgstetten where the remains of the border of the Roman Empire known as 'the limes' or locally as the "Devil's Rampart" can be explored, the flat and open expanse of the Ries plateau a meteorite impact crater formed around 14 million years ago and the medieval old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Distance?

92 km split over 5 days of walking with a maximum daily distance of 22 km.

Grade?

This walking tour is graded easy to moderate.

Why walk it?

- The scenery is what makes this trip so special. The walking takes you through ever changing landscapes from deciduous and coniferous forest, to open plains that are dotted with lakes and blooms of wild flowers.

- As with most of Germany the streets of the towns and cities are clean which adds to the beauty of these medieval townscapes giving the Romantic Road a certain fairy tale feel.

- Bavarian beers and the wines from the Franconian wine region are some of the best in Germany, and the perfect accompaniment to any meal.
