Bike & Boat is a holiday format that has been growing in popularity over the past five years, to the extent that demand is beginning to outstrip supply. We offer a number of Bike & Boat trips in various European locations, however the Danube’s sheer size (it passes through 10 countries en-route to the Black Sea) and well developed cycle paths makes it the premier Bike & Boat destination. The Danube’s popularity means these trips should be booked well in advance to avoid disappointment.
This week we focus on the journey from Passau to Budapest.
Distance: 169 – 213 km.
Grading: Easy. This trip is suitable for cyclists of all skill levels and there are cycling options each day with daily distances ranging between 18 and 49 km along flat cycle paths.
The trip starts in the historic Bavarian city of Passau before moving through Bratislava, Budapest, Vienna and the Wachau valley all of which you will have the chance to explore.
Wondering how you can visit 4 countries, some of the finest European cities in terms of culture and history, and fit in a daily cycle all in the space of a week? The Danube Bike & Boat Tour from Passau to Budapest is suitable for all, from beginners to families and fits in a good deal of beautiful scenery, culture, cuisine, and relaxation. There really is something to suit all interests from cycling through the beautiful countryside of Slovakia, Hungary and Austria to sightseeing in the capital cities of Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna or relaxing on board the comfortable 4* MS Carissima, renovated in early 2016.
Towards the end of the week the Carissima pushes on through the Wachau Valley stopping to let passengers disembark and explore the rolling hills that bristle with vineyards, apricot orchards and fortresses; at this stage it is possible to visit a winery for a tour and tasting session.
The Passau to Budapest Bike & Boat is a 7 day/ 8 night itinerary and is available for a Sunday start from April to October, however the Carissima’s limited cabin space of 150 passengers fills up quickly so be sure to book early as to secure a cabin of your choice.
Passau is easily reached by train from the following cities; Linz (1h30) or Salzburg (2h45). For information on train times and fares see Bahn.com, alternatively visit Rail Europe for information on rail passes and schedules.
