A message from our Founder
After what seemed like an almost unbeatable challenge in 2020 and 2021, I'm filled with gratitude to realise that this has been the biggest year Macs Adventure has ever had, with over 30,000 people enjoying active travel experiences in 37 destination countries.
This year saw us all begin with a cautious optimism that we could finally fulfil the plans and goals which seemed out of reach for the past few years, and I sincerely hope that you have been able to achieve yours.
After so much uncertainty, a sudden resurgence of demand in spring ’22 meant that along with so many in the travel industry, we needed to expand our team faster than was possible. We know that the speed of the service we pride ourselves in fell short, and for that, we are sorry. The hospitality industry too faced its own unique set of challenges, and that was difficult to negotiate for our local partner businesses.
But we’re delighted to say that over the year things have returned close to normality. We have welcomed 45 new passionate people into our team at Macs Adventure and our local suppliers have re-built and are excited to welcome you in 2023.
For the first time, we brought everyone at Macs Adventure across our Glasgow and Colorado offices together in person for our “MacsFest” team event in Edinburgh last month. I cannot describe how good it was to see everyone face-to-face instead of on a video call, although I’m not sure they would all say the same about witnessing my Ceilidh dancing up-close!
The Macs community is stronger than ever with over 3000 members in our Facebook Community (do join, it’s a fantastic resource for sharing tips and inspiration with like-minded people). Seeing everyone support and encourage each other on their adventures has been wonderful. A particular shout out to group members Lyn and David for their incredible solo Via Francigena diaries which elicited tears, joy and laughter from all of us along the way.
So where do we go from here? I’ve been thinking a lot about the future.
Firstly, we want to advocate our style of self-guided active travel, which is still a bit of a best-kept-secret, but we really think that it’s the best way for you to make your own discoveries, immerse yourself in local cultures, and ultimately be proud of what you can achieve and learn along the way.
Watch our video about the Macs Way of travel and share it with your friends!
Self-guided travel (especially on foot or by bike), is inherently a very sustainable way to travel, but we can and should do more. We want to expand our sustainability focus to every area of our business and have set ourselves the goal of achieving B Corp accreditation. We’ll be dedicating a lot of time and resource towards having a more positive impact on the world and the communities we touch.
We'll also be organising our tours into Trip Types to help make it much easier to find the perfect adventure, focusing first on developing more In Style and Slower Adventures, with a bit of extra time to really absorb interesting places, enjoy local food and wine, and see the sights.
As usual, in 2023 you can expect some exciting new adventures, destination inspiration, and hopefully even more incredible stories of achievement.
It’s already a busy year, and I cannot stress enough that if you're considering one of our popular classic routes like the West Highland Way or Tour du Mont Blanc, you must book now. But don’t worry, there are so many wonderful alternatives too, and an enthusiastic team waiting to tell you all about them!
Thank you for your support, and wishing you all a fantastic end to the year.
