The Adlerweg: Best of the Eagle's Way

This tour is ideal for Alpine connoisseurs looking for their next challenge, but who prefer more relaxed walking days. Enjoy a balance of comfortable nights in welcoming family-run hotels and spectacularly located mountain refuges. It is rated moderate to strenuous with significant ascent and descent on most days. As with all alpine trips, you should be sure-footed and have a head for heights.

Long-Distance Trails, Accessible by Rail, Alpine Walking

We have graded this hiking tour as moderate to strenuous, with some days being easier and others more demanding. The paths run on a mix of well-maintained wide & narrow mountain paths, with only a few exposed areas.

Please be aware that some residual snow may lie in patches on the highest passes, but this will not require any special equipment or skills, just some alpine walking experience. Walking poles are essential for this tour. To get the most of this trip, you should be in good physical shape and be an experienced walker, having already done some alpine walking.

This trip is suitable for hikers with some alpine experience and who have a good level of fitness. You should be sure-footed and have a head for heights. The hikes are between approx. 5 and 7 hours (not counting breaks) and have roughly 800 to 1300 m of ascent and descent daily. It is difficult to shorten or skip the walking days, and therefore so you should be in good enough shape to complete each day’s hike.

The majority of your nights are in small hotels (generally 3*), and some nights are in mountain huts (a sheet sleeping bag liner is required) as hotels are not available in these locations.

All of our accommodations are hand-picked and offer a warm welcome to walkers. Please be aware that twin & double rooms in Austria and Germany (Doppelzimmer in German) are typically 2 single mattresses side by side in one double bed frame with two separate duvet covers and pillows.

You will find examples of the accommodation we normally use on the itinerary. If these accommodations are not available, we will use a hotel of a similar or better standard than those described. 

Single Rooms and Solo Walkers

The trip is not suitable for solo travelers due to the remoteness and difficult terrain. If you require single rooms within a party, a limited number are available, and a supplement is payable. Single rooms are not available in the mountain huts.

Meals

Breakfast in the 3* hotels is a hearty buffet selection with plenty of local baked goods, cheeses, and meats. Breakfasts in the mountain hotels and huts tend to be very basic; bread, butter, jams, coffee, tea, and orange juice.  If you prefer something more substantial before walking, we recommend carrying a few energy bars with you each day and supplement your breakfast with one of these. Packed lunch items can be bought locally from supermarkets or the local bakeries.

In the mountain huts (days 3 and 5), dinner is included. At most of your accommodations, you can pre-order a packed lunch for the next day as the beautifully situated mountain huts and alpine pastures along the way usually invite you to stop for a break.

All of the walks are way-marked, and we provide you with turn-by-turn instructions, maps, and access to our GPS smartphone navigation app, for each walk, so you will have no problem finding your way.

The trip is available to start on any day of the week from July to October. The region is very popular on weekends, and therefore the availability of the accommodation becomes tight, to avoid any issues we would recommend booking early.

The weather in the Alps can change very quickly. You should be prepared for all weather conditions and pack accordingly. Please bear in mind that the weather can be changeable at high altitudes. Cold fronts can occur even in the summer (snowfall in the Alps at the height of summer is not unheard of), especially at the beginning of the season (end of June/beginning of July). You may still have to cross melting snowfields.

By Train: The easiest way to travel to Pertisau is by bus & train, take the train to Jenbach and catch a bus or take a taxi to Achensee. There are trains to Jenbach from Munich & Innsbruck Airport, and you can find more information on the Deutsche Bahn website.

By Car: You can travel by car via Munich to Jenbach and on to Lake Achensee. You can park the car for the whole week in the Karwendeltäler parking lot (approx. 40 €)

By Plane: The nearest airports are Munich Airport or Innsbruck Airport. We are happy to organize a private airport transfer for you for an additional charge.

By Train: From Hall and Innsbruck you have good train connections to Achensee and your onward travel. You can easily get to Jenbach by train or to Pertisau by bus to pick up your car.

By Plane: From Innsbruck airport, there is a direct connection to London, Amsterdam, and other European cities.

Your bags will be transferred between your accommodation as per your itinerary. We ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to 20kg/44lbs per person. Please note that there is no bag transfer on days 3 & 5 (Karwendelhaus and Hallerangerhaus) due to their remote location. On these days, you will carry a few overnight necessities in your day pack, and you will be reunited with your luggage the following day at the next accommodation.
