  • What Makes a Camino Route Strenuous

Strenuous Camino routes are for walkers who want to truly push themselves – the kind of self-guided Camino de Santiago trip where you feel every climb in your legs and every summit in your smile.

Steeper Climbs and Bigger Elevation Gains: Expect long, steady ascents and descents, sometimes over high passes and exposed ridges. Daily elevation gain is noticeably higher than on moderate routes, and some sections feel like real mountain walking.

Longer, More Intense Days: You’re typically walking 14 - 20 miles (22 - 32 km) a day, often with several big days in a row. A solid fitness base, training walks with a daypack, and well broken-in walking boots are essential.

Rugged Terrain and Technical Sections: Instead of mostly paved or gently rolling paths, strenuous Camino routes include rocky tracks, loose gravel, stone steps, and narrow forest trails. Walking poles are a smart idea, especially for long descents late in the day.

Less Downtime, Bigger Rewards: There are fewer short days and more continuous effort, so you’ll have to be choosy about long café stops and sightseeing. In return, you’ll finish each stage tired, proud, and very ready for a hearty Spanish dinner and well-earned glass of wine.
