Enjoy a short break re-charging the batteries in the Mediterranean sun, taking in the highlights of the classic walk from the Mediterranean fishing village of Collioure in France to whitewashed Cadaques in Spain.
Starting in Collioure, the route heads south past terraced vineyards to the wine-producing region of Banyuls-sur-Mer. A short transfer takes you across the border to Llanca in Spain to continue inland briefly to the Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, before heading back to the coast and the pretty fishing village of Port de la Selva. It will be easy to see why many artists including Dali, Matisse and Picasso were so inspired by these landscapes!
Finish by heading across the Cap de Creus national park and on rugged coastal trails down to the Cap de Creus lighthouse, Port Ligat, home to the famous Salvador Dali, and finally the beautiful town of Cadaques.
Fly into Perpignan or Girona Airport, and make your way to Collioure by train (25m or 1h15 respectively).
With its pastel-coloured houses, pretty harbour, and beach, Collioure is a delightful Mediterranean town, which inspired the avant garde and colourful artwork of Henri Matisse. Check in to your hotel and enjoy dinner at one of the many seaside restaurants, perhaps sampling some of the tasty Collioure anchovies.
Bidding Collioure a sad farewell, return to the Fort of St Elme, which you passed yesterday, and then head along the coast to the bustling quayside of Port Vendres. Skirting round coves and creeks continue to Cap Bear and its lighthouse with pink marble staircase. Pass Paulilles beach with azure-coloured waters perfect for a refreshing dip and finally arrive at Banyuls-sur-Mer.
This charming seaside town is well known for its fantastic dessert wines, made from the Grenache Noir grapes growing in the surrounding terraced vineyards. Rest your legs and sample a glass of Banyuls wine over dinner.
Walk: 16.4km, 385m Ascent/Descent, 3-4 hours.
After an hour’s transfer over the border to the seaside town of Llanca, start the day with a climb up to the impressive Benadictine monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes (480m) which dates back to the 10th century and has wonderful views overlooking the Cap de Creus national park. Descend from here to Port de la Selva, with views of the sparkling coastline guiding you all the way.
Overnight tonight is in a stylish little spa hotel right on the seafront.
Walk: 15.4km, 525m ascent/504m descent, 5-6 hours
Overnight: Port de la Selva
Head across the Cap de Creus national park, passing the ruins of 10th century Sant Baldiri de Tavallera and the wild and rugged Cala Tavallera, before reaching the Cap de Creus lighthouse, the most easterly point of the Iberian peninsula.
Continue past coves of turquoise waters and pretty beaches to Port Ligat, home to Dali’s iconic house and now a museum, the Casa-Museo Salvador Dali. It is worth booking in advance if you would like to visit the museum, which we highly recommend.
A long day’s walking is rewarded by arriving in the elegant whitewashed town of Cadaques, the perfect place to finish your short break in the sun.
Walk: 22.5km, 610m ascent/descent, 7-8 hours.
