Walking in the Bernese Oberland

Bernese Oberland

Highlights
  • Hike amidst an impressive backdrop of the iconic Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau
  • Indulge in Gruyère and Etivaz cheese in Gstaad, whilst seeing how they are made
  • Discover the picturesque chocolate-box villages of Mürren, Wengen and Grindelwald.
  • Hear the tinkle of cowbells ringing and see the soaring peaks and crystal lakes
  • On your daily walks, work up an appetite for delicious local Raclette or Rösti
  • Enjoy the flexibility and freedom to extend or shorten your walk by public transport.

Located in the heart of Switzerland, the Bernese Oberland is one of the most magnificent regions for hiking in Europe. From its deep valleys to looming mountains and lush pine forests, this area embodies the classic postcard image of the Alps. Why not try some local mountain cheese, Bergkäse, which is sold from honesty boxes at farms you pass en route? A perfect accompaniment to your picnic lunch on the trail.

To get a taster for all the Bernese Oberland has to offer, embark on our Best of the Bernese Oberland trip and walk in the footsteps of some of the most impressive alpine athletes like Ueli Steck. (but make sure to avoid climbing the Eiger North Face, like he did!) Spend your evenings exploring the charming traditional villages of Grindelwald, Murren and Wengen, always accompanied by cowbells ringing faintly in the distance. Epic trails which cross through the Bernese Oberland, such as the Via Alpina and the Grindelwald Trail, are also waiting to be discovered. Or why not indulge in traditional Swiss cheese and chocolate on our Trails of Gruyeres and Gstaad as you learn how they are made.

Macs Adventure has been creating trips in Switzerland since 2008, and our knowledgeable team are waiting to answer any questions you may have. Whichever trip you choose, you can be assured that we have picked the best accommodations and walks this region has to offer, providing you with an outstanding experience.

Discover Bernese Oberland

  • Visiting the Bernese Oberland

This picturesque corner of Switzerland offers some of the most spectacular experiences, hike in the shadow of the Eiger's north face, admire the villages of Gstaad or Murren, or watch the thundering Staubbach Falls from Lauterbrunnen, the Swiss Alps don’t get more in-your-face beautiful than this.

There are plenty of things to do when visiting which do not include hiking, do not miss:

    1. The Jungfraujoch, the top of Europe, a viewing and adventure platform at 3454 meters above sea level providing breathtaking views across the Alps.

    2. The Schilthorn a panoramic revolving restaurant at the summit, Piz Gloria, which was featured in the James Bond movie, Her Majesty's Secret Service.

    3. The First Cliff Walk, a lookout platform near the terrace at the Bergrestaurant. The terrace rises 45 metres out into the void simulating the feeling of flying in the mountains

    4. The Gletscher Schlucht (Grindelwald Glacier Gorge), a popular destination for a unique sensory walk through its exposed rock galleries and tunnels, which have been carved out by glacier melt.
