The 11^th century trail traces a fabulous route through rural Japan and visits the three shrines of Kumano.   Top of the trails The 96-mile West Highland Way is always popular and not just a bucket list must-do for Scottish walkers but fabulous long-distance walk for people from around the world. When will you go?   The best way This is a pilgrimage route that is hard to beat, which is why so many people want to walk “the Camino" route. If you don’t have time for the full 800km European trail, walk sections of a week or two weeks at a time.   Right royal Perhaps you saw this route in Julia Bradbury’s BBC series, German Wanderlust. King Ludwig's Way is one of Germany’s best-known footpaths through the beautiful Upper Bavaria to King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle.   Ride on If you like flat, mostly traffic-free cycling in spectacular countryside, the Danube Cycle Path will tick every box – and more. The path follows most of the length of the 1800-mile River Danube through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Pick shorter sections for shorter holidays.   Icing on the cake In Iceland you quickly run out of superlatives. Its landscape is breath-takingly amazingly wonderful. Just book and see for yourself. Iceland should be on every traveller’s bucket list.   The highest high Towering snow-capped peaks, prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, yak bells mingling with the chants of Buddhist monks in the morning air and the warmest of welcomes at every village.
