Kit review: Bergans Vikke jacket

A new technical mid-layer jacket made by Bergans of Norway, the Vikke, is ideal for walking, whether it’s lower-level country rambles or high altitude mountaineering. The technical jacket is made of 100% Merino wool. Merino is a proven winner for outdoors activities because it offers natural warmth, even when it’s wet, and superb breathability, which means it won’t get damp when you sweat. Another bonus of Merino wool is that it dries quickly and it doesn’t tend to whiff, even after many days of use. (This is in contrast to many man-made fabrics, which tend to become smelly with dried sweat. Sorry to be so plain talking about this!)

Bergans have designed a jacket that works well for both active and casual wear. So if you are looking for clothing that can double up on a walking (or cycling) holiday it’s a good choice. I might, for example, stow the jacket in my walking rucksack for spells of cooler weather and then also wear it in the evenings when going out for something to eat or drink. A lot of thought has gone into the features of the Vikke jacket. The male and female versions are cut to suit the different physiques. The jackets also boast:

  • Two front pockets.
  • Elastic cuffs with thumbholes.
  • Elastic hem.
  • Flatlock seams in contrasting colours.
  •  YKK zip in front with soft storm guard protecting the chin.

For the Bergans Lady Vikke jacket see Bergans of Norway and buy in the UK at Tiso for £100. Buy the Bergans Men’s Vikke Jacket, rrp £100, for £70.
