Doing the Nakasendo Trail and opting to go for our extended Kyoto to Tokyo version of the tour is the perfect way to see the juxtaposition of old and new life in Japan. Starting in Kyoto which is considered the cultural capital of Japan (pictured above) and then ending in the ultramodern, neon-laden capital, Toyko (pictured below). Discover the hustle and bustle of this exciting capital as you take in all the sights and sounds.
Nakasendo itself translates to 'Central Mountain Road' or 'Inner Mountain Path' and you will certainly be treated to some spectacular mountain views along the way! As it's an ancient postal route, you will walk in the footsteps of samurai and even royalty as you pass through forests, countryside, and paved village paths. The perfectly preserved postal towns are at odds with what you have learned to expect from the advanced modern image you may have of Japan which makes visiting this side of the country even more special.
On this trip, you will stay in both minshuku (rural family-operated bed and breakfasts) and ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) where you can immerse yourself in the local culture. The food you will be served will be as nourishing as it is delicious.Â
Some of the recommended highlights to include while in Japan:-
*Visit one of the largest wooden buildings in the world which is home to a 16-meter tall bronze and gold Buddha.Â
*Visit the Senoji (Asakusa Kannon) Temple - the oldest religious building in the city that is just bursting with color!
On our extended version of this tour that includes Nara and Mount Koya you can also include the following in your trip:
*Visit Nara Park where you may see free-roaming deer.Â
*Go on a cable car to Mount Koya, the center of Shingon Buddhism. Here you can stay in a temple lodging (shukubo), try Buddhist vegetarian cuisine (shojin-ryori), and attend morning prayers.
