Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive PortoThis self-guided walking tour begins in the city of Porto, set on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Douro River. Explore its old quarter, the Ribeira and its maze of narrow cobbled streets and beautiful plazas. On arrival at Porto Airport you will be transferred to your hotel. Depending on your time of arrival, you may wish to begin exploring today and have dinner in one of the many quayside restaurants.
Centrally located on Batalha Square, Legendary Porto Hotel is a 5-minute walk from São Bento Metro Station. The soundproofed rooms at Legendary Porto Hotel have new furnishings and blackout curtains. Each comes equipped with tea and coffee-making facilities and include a seating area with a sofa and a flat-screen TV. En suite bathrooms come with hairdryer.
Today you will take a scenic train ride to the Douro Valley, a World UNESCO Heritage Site. The train journey takes around 2.5 hours. However you have the flexibility to decide when to leave Porto as you may wish to explore more of this amazing city this morning. Marvel at the 14th century ramparts and the Sé Cathedral, which dates from the 12th and 13th centuries.
Your memorable train journey from Porto to the Douro Valley is a remarkable feat of engineering as there are 26 tunnels to go through and 30 bridges to cross. Pass through areas of outstanding natural beauty; vineyard-covered hillsides that stretch down to the banks of the Douro River. Upon arrival in Pinhão train station, you can take a taxi (payable locally) to your accommodation.
The modern LBV House Hotel is in the centre of the Alto Douro wine region, enjoying a panoramic view over the Douro River.
The LBV House Hotel’s rooms are all modernly decorated and feature balconies overlooking the river or the slopes. All air-conditioned rooms and suites include a mini-bar, cable TV, and a private bathroom.
From the doorstep of your accommodation in Pinhao, you'll begin your walk to Vilarinho São Romão, absorbing the spectacular scenery of the Alto Douro Wine Region. This is a land of traditions and there is much evidence to suggest that wine production has been a livelihood here for more than two thousand years. It is the first wine region in the world that was demarcated and the harvest here is still as traditional as it used to be and still done by hand and foot (with the squashing of the grapes!)
As you walk up and over the hilly slopes you will pass through the village of Provosende, where you may rest and admire its old manor houses. You'll pass a small tavern or “tacsa” that has an interesting exhibition regarding the local wine production. Crossing the plateau, pass by more traditional wineries and villages before arriving at Vilarinho São Romão.
Total ascent/descent: 670m/151m
Located on the Quinta do Portal vineyard in the wine-producing Douro Valley, Casa das Pipas boasts fabulous views of vineyards and rolling green countryside. Enjoy the hotel's selection of fine wines at the Quinta do Portal's restaurant, as well as its outdoor swimming pool. This family-run vineyard is a producer of some of the finest Douro wines, Port Wines, fortified Moscatel wines and Olive Oil. Indulging in the food and wine at this fabulous wine hotel is an experience in itself.
After a traditional breakfast, it's time to continue exploring the beautiful Douro region. Enjoy incredible views across the valley on your way towards the pretty village of Sabrosa, believed to be the birthplace of Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan), the great fifteenth-century Portuguese navigator and the first man to complete a circumnavigate voyage over the world - the ultimate proof that the earth was round.
Continue down the slopes to meet the river Pinhão, where an old bridge, dating from Roman times, awaits you. Then, you will reach the small village of Favaios. Taste its traditional wood oven-baked bread and its famous wine, the “favaios” and then, continue to the small historic town of Alijó. The highlight is the excellent regional gastronomy and the excellent wine from the region, especially the famous Moscatel de Favaios.
Total ascent/descent: 631m/627m
As this is the longest and hardest walk in the tour, a shorter 12km walk is available, via a short transfer to Sabrosa, where you'll begin the walk. It has less elevation, with 500m ascent.
Warmly decorated rooms feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and minifridges; some have balconies. Complimentary amenities include a breakfast buffet, parking and an outdoor pool.
After walking back into Favaios and perhaps buying bread in a local bakery for a picnic lunch, you pass an iron settlement from the 1st century BC. It is worth paying a small fee to partake in some wine-tasting at Quinta de Avessada. This Quinta has been producing wine for at least a century and has an interactive museum that you may look around. This type of museum is the first of its kind in the country and is full of innovative activities that will surprise its visitors.
Following this visit and after walking through farmland, you will reach a wonderful view point where you can see hamlets perched on outcrops over the river and within the vineyards as you reach you final destination, Casal de Loivos.
Total ascent/descent: 245m/436m
A palatial residence from the 17th century, with 6 rooms, a big balcony and with a very unique view of the Douro river. Enjoy the panoramic pool (for guests’ exclusive use), a very welcoming living room with a fireplace, TV and various game tables. Wi-Fi is also available.
This morning you will walk from Casal de Loivos back to Pinhão (along a different route) with stunning views over the Douro River and beyond to the south, east and west. The scenery of vineyards and mountains carved out by rivers is indeed special and it is no wonder that this area has been designated a World UNESCO Heritage Site.
A short transfer will take you from Pinhão to Regua, where you will stay for the evening.
Total ascent/descent: 97m/434m
Imagine a century-old house, a few meters from the banks of the River Douro, side by side with an old and picturesque train station. A place that breathes history and where different generations meet, giving rise to a project with an eye on the future… Welcome to the Original Douro Hotel! This charming friendly hotel has an old tavern where wines, sausages, regional bread or jams, not to mention the good wines of the Douro are all served up in an intimate atmosphere.
This morning you will board your river boat for a peaceful all-day cruise down the Douro River, back to Porto. See the thousands of tiers of vine-lined terraces and the many small towns and settlements perched on the sloping hillsides. On a clear day this scenery is reflected in the waters of the river as you sail along. Many of these villages have retained their medieval simplicity with tiny communities clustered around historic churches, monasteries and castles. Cross 14 locks and descend over 35m at the various dams on this incredible journey. You will also enjoy lunch on board which includes local wine.
Later this afternoon you'll arrive in Porto and make your way to the hotel. As this city is renowned for its world class cuisine, perhaps you can seek out a great restaurant as a treat on your last night.
*Please note the River Cruise is only available from April through to October. If you are travelling outside these months, you will be transferred to Porto by car, stopping off for a visit to the Casa Mateus museum, an old manor from the 17th century with beautiful gardens.
The tour finishes after breakfast and an included transfer will take you back to Porto Airport for your journey home.

Other Information
Is it for me?A really great aspect of this tour is that it combines spectacular walks through the timeless landscapes of the Douro Valley, including plenty of opportunities for tasting world-famous wines, with a legendary train journey and a wonderfully scenic boat cruise along the Douro River/Casa de Mateus Visit. The majority of the accommodations are in traditional guest houses set within the vineyards.
Slower Adventures | Where walking and cycling meet easy-going exploring, our Slower Adventures are the perfect combination. Most days are filled with picturesque journeys with some free time to dive into the destination and experience the people, local food and culture as you go.
Inn to Inn Walking | Walk from place-to-place changing accommodations each night. Generally staying in B&Bs, inns, and guesthouses.
Solo Travellers
The minimum age for this tour is: 18 Years
This tour is suitable for most people that are in good physical condition. The daily distances are not that far, although you should be aware that there are some quite significant elevation gains through the local vineyard terraces in the Douro Valley. However, on some of the days, there is no walking at all to make way for scenic train and boat rides to and from Porto. As this is a self-guided walk you will be responsible for navigation, decision making and safety during your trip.
This route is suitable for most regular walkers of average fitness. You should train by walking some daily walks of similar daily distances to your planned itinerary.
Your 7 night, 8 day Porto & the Douro Valley self-guided walk in Portugal includes 7 nights in 4 & 3* hotels and guest houses set on wine estates. All of the hotels have been specifically chosen for their comfort and some also for their great locations with fabulous views over the Douro River and surrounding vineyards. A warm welcome is assured and some have swimming pools or gardens that you may wander through.
Alternative accommodation
During the high season, you might be booked into alternative accommodations which are not listed in the description. Any alternative accommodation will be of the same or better standard as those described.
Single Rooms & Solo Walkers
If you require single rooms within your party we would be happy to accommodate you although there is a single room supplement payable. Solo walkers are also welcome for an additional charge which is unfortunately quite high due to the high cost of the shared transfers not being split.
Meals
7 Breakfasts and 1 lunch on the Douro River Cruise are included. 1 Dinner is also included on Day 5. In Porto, you can eat dinner in one of the many restaurants and at the other locales (because they are rural areas) at the hotels. We recommend that you make reservations for dinner, especially at the quintas. We recommend trying the traditional and locally-sourced food, especially the fresh seafood in Porto which is simply delicious. For lunches, you can find local cheeses, meats and breads in local shops or markets, or the hotels may make you a packed lunch on request.
The route is way-marked in places and not in others. You will receive a booklet including a description of the route, a small pdf of the map and points of interest. For navigation, you will also have access to the Macs Adventure Smartphone App enabling you to follow the route using your phone's GPS so you will have no problems finding the way. You can simply download the GPX tracks to your phone for offline use and off you go!

You can begin your trip Monday-Saturday from January to June and then from September to December. Spring and autumn is the best time to visit the Douro Valley. In early March the trees of the almond groves start to blossom with delicate white flowers. While in mid to late September the grape harvest begins and the normally slow pace of life in the Douro Valley kicks up a gear. Please note that the Douro River Cruise cannot be guaranteed until May due to the water levels. May through to October sees full operation. A private transfer by car will replace the cruise should you travel outside the cruise season.
As the summer months can be extremely hot, making walking quite uncomfortable the departure dates are limited to spring, autumn and winter months. Please be aware that in the winter months some of the hotels and hotel restaurants may be closed however there will be options available in the local area and the accommodation you will stay in may not be exactly the same as that in the detailed itinerary however it will be of a similar standard.
Porto Airport is the nearest airport and is served by many airlines, such as Easyjet, Ryanair, KLM and British Airways. Porto is also accessible from Lisbon Airport.
From Lisbon Airport take an airport shuttle bus to the Santa Apolonia Train Station and then a train to Porto which takes around two and a half hours. Lisbon is also served by many airlines in the UK and from many other gateways in Europe
All transfers to and from Porto Airport (or to/from train or bus station in Porto)to the first and last hotels are included in the price.
Your bags will be transferred as per your itinerary. We request that you limit your luggage to 20kg per person and one bag per person.
At Macs Adventure, we work in partnership with many luggage transfer providers who set a limit on how many bags/suitcases they will transfer per person, and also the weight of the bag/suitcase. Your booking includes transfer of 1 bag per person. It is very important that you read the luggage information specific to your tour before departure. If you do not adhere to these limits, there is a great possibility that you will be charged locally both for extra bags or if they are too heavy. This limitation can be a challenge, especially as airlines generally have limits that are higher. However, our luggage providers have reasons for these limits (usually due to the Health and Safety of their employees), which we must respect.
The distances and ascent/descents are approximations of the recommended routes. Please note that for this tour, some ascents and descents can be more than what is stated on the itinerary, and is dependent on where your guesthouse is located.
Please be prepared by packing all necessary items. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, a day pack, sun hat, and sunscreen.
Our pre-departure information pack has detailed advice and a packing list on what to bring. This includes walking gear, hiking boots, rain gear, day pack and other specifics.
Please be prepared by packing all necessary items, for example, proper rain gear (jacket and trousers), sun hat and sunscreen. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, and a day pack.
It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity, emergency evacuation and hospital care.
This tour is suitable for most people that are in good physical condition. Although the daily distances are not that far, it has been rated easy to moderate as there are some quite significant elevation gains through the local vineyard terraces in the Douro Valley. However on some of the days there is no walking at all to make way for scenic train and boat rides to and from Porto.
As the summer months can be extremely hot, making walking quite uncomfortable the departure dates are limited to spring and autumn months. In the spring there will be lots of wildflowers and in the autumn it is the grape harvest, so it will be a great time to be in this area.
We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as this area is extremely popular. You will find up to date availability on our website and we will always try and accommodate your plans so just ask.
Your bags will be transferred as per your itinerary. We request that you limit your luggage to 20kg per person and one bag per person.
You will need good walking shoes/boots, comfortable walking clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers, a daypack and hats/gloves etc. There is a more comprehensive list in your information pack.
Porto has an airport and is therefore the best airport to fly into as the tour starts and finishes here. On arrival in Porto Airport you will be picked up and transferred to your hotel. On departure you will need to make your own way to the airport, but since it is only 6 miles from the city centre and the metro goes there, it is easy to get to. You could also take a taxi which takes around 20 minutes and costs around €25.
You can use public transport or local taxis to continue to your next overnight stop, this is payable locally. Our local partners in Portugal, and/or your accommodation providers will be able to assist with this.
