Top Tips for Walking the Pennine Way

The Pennine Way is the perfect long-distance walking trail for those who yearn for the “great outdoors” and want to discover the glorious and remote English countryside.

This challenging yet rewarding National Trail (the UK’s very first), takes you from the windswept moors of the Peak District and the majestic Yorkshire Dales, across Hadrian’s Wall country and into the rugged Cheviot Hills near the Scottish border.

Before embarking on this walking adventure, Macs Adventures suggests the following recommendations, which come directly from a staff member who walked the Pennine Way last August:

  • Buy packed lunches at your B&B or in a small shop before you set off for the day is possible, as it is difficult to find anywhere to eat or buy supplies en route
  • As some days of walking are long it is advisable to begin your day before 9:30am, especially in the start and end of the walking season when it will go dark earlier than usual
  • Since the terrain can be boggy (especially in wet weather) and difficult to negotiate at ties, please remember that this will slow you down and this needs to be taken into account as you will not be able to walk s fast as usual in these sections
  • Don’t forget to bring some binoculars as you will have great views over the hills and countryside and there are many birds to spot, including colorful warblers and possibly a kingfisher or two!
  • In the summer months a fly net for your head is recommended as there may be pesky black flies around.
  • Across more remote sections there is limited phone signal, so make sure you catch up with friends and family at your accommodations
  • This long-distance tour is for people who are up for a rewarding challenge as some of the days can be quite demanding and you should have previous long-distance walking experience
  • Anyone with a fear of cows should watch this video as there are LOTS of fields with cows that you will walk through. It gives guidance on the fact that basically cows are curious creatures and what to do if they start to follow you!

Give yourselves a pat on the back once you finish this amazing trail. You will deserve a well-earned pint in the local pub and some fish and chips for your endeavours.
