  • Books set in Yorkshire that everyone should read

For those who like to know a place before they visit it, this list is for you. These books aren’t just famous—they’re brilliant stories that also give a proper peek into Yorkshire: its wild landscapes, quirky characters, and rich history. Here are our favourites:

    • Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë – Stormy love on the windswept Moors.
    • The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett – A hidden garden, a bit of magic, and surprisingly grown-up vibes.
    • A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines – A boy, a bird, and a Yorkshire mining town with grit and heart.
    • All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot – Hilarious, heartwarming tales from a rural vet who knows Yorkshire inside out.
    • The Railway Children by Edith Nesbit – Three kids, a country adventure, and a touch of Yorkshire charm.

  • Lights, Camera, Action in the Lake District!

It’s not just us at Macs Adventure who think the Lake District is inspiring—Hollywood agrees! Keep your eyes peeled while walking and you might spot scenes from these films:

    • Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens – Derwentwater doubles as a galaxy far, far away.
    • Peter Rabbit – Beatrix Potter’s backyard brought to life, starring James Corden and Margot Robbie.
    • Tommy – 1970s cult classic filmed in Borrowdale Valley—Haystacks included.
    • Miss Potter – Renée Zellweger steps into Beatrix Potter’s actual home at Yew Tree Farm.

  • Hadrian's Wall Path

Hadrian's Wall Path follows the route of the UNESCO world heritage wall, built to keep the barbaric Scots out of Roman territory.  This outstanding historical site is punctuated with milecastles, museums and recreations, not to mention some of the best walking in England.
