  • Best Time to Walk The Camino de Santiago

March - April – Routes begin to wake up. Holy Week can be busy in Spain and Portugal; weather is mixed but improving. Great time if you’re OK with rain and want fewer crowds.

May - June – Many pilgrims consider this the very best time: long days, flowers in bloom, warm but not extreme temps and plenty of open accommodations.

July - August – Peak season across most Camino de Santiago routes. Very social atmosphere, but you’ll want to book early and start walking early to avoid midday heat.

September - October – Another top choice: harvest season, golden light and pleasant daytime highs. Some mountain routes and albergues begin to wind down late October.

November – Quiet, reflective and weather-dependent. You’ll find a very different Camino, with more locals and fewer long-distance walkers.

  • FAQs: best time to walk Camino de Santiago

What’s the single best month to walk the Camino de Santiago?
There’s no one answer, but many pilgrims choose May, June or September for a balance of weather, services and crowd levels.

When is the Camino de Santiago trail busiest?
On most popular routes, July and August are the busiest months, followed by May and September, especially near Santiago de Compostela.

Is summer too hot to walk the Camino?
Not necessarily, but parts of the Camino Francés and some southern routes can be very hot in July and August. Pick shorter stages, start early and stay hydrated, or choose a cooler coastal route like the Camino del Norte.

Can I walk the Camino de Santiago in winter?
Yes, but it’s only recommended if you’re experienced and prepared for cold, rain, possible snow and fewer open albergues. Stick to lower-altitude sections and plan your stops carefully.

What’s the best time for a first-time Camino traveler from the US?
If you’re new to long-distance walking, we’d suggest May, June or September on the Camino Francés or Camino Portugués. The climate is forgiving, services are open, and you’ll meet plenty of fellow pilgrims.
