Lech River Trail

Lechweg Trail in Austria & Germany

Highlights
  • Walk the Lech River Trail (Lechweg), a 77-mile Alpine route in Austria and Bavaria.
  • Follow the Lech River in Austria and Germany to Lechfall and Füssen.
  • Enjoy Lech valley gorges, waterfalls, nature reserves and Bavarian castles.
  • Walk a moderate long-distance footpath on good tracks, ideal for regular walkers.
  • Self-guided with Macs Adventure: stays, luggage transfers and route notes.

Macs Adventure is all about self-guided walking holidays. For over 20 years we’ve been helping travellers explore Europe on foot, arranging thousands of self-guided trips with hand-picked accommodation, daily luggage transfers and 24/7 on-trip support. On the Lech River Trail, you enjoy the freedom of independent walking with the reassurance that every detail is taken care of.

The Lechweg links Austria and Germany, following the Lech River from its high-Alpine source area near Lech am Arlberg, through the Tyrolean Lech valley, to the Lechfall and royal castles near Füssen in Bavaria. It’s one of Europe’s best long-distance footpaths if you’re looking for river scenery, authentic Alpine villages and comfortable daily walking distances rather than big summit days.

From our first-hand route testing to our UK-based team of Austria and Germany specialists, Macs Adventure is well placed to help you choose the right itinerary, the best time of year to walk, and any extra nights or add-ons you might want – then organise everything from luggage transfers to digital mapping.

The people behind the scenery

  • Lech River Trail vs The Salt Trail

The Salt Trail focuses on historic salt routes and lakes, with more cultural stops. The Lechweg feels wilder, following a free-flowing Alpine river through protected landscapes. If you want nature and a sense of space, choose the Lech River Trail.

For walkers, we recommend June or September for both routes – avoiding peak crowds while still enjoying long, light days and comfortable walking temperatures.

  • Lech River Trail vs King Ludwig Way

Think of King Ludwig Way as the Lechweg’s gentler Bavarian cousin: lakes, monasteries and castles, generally lower-level walking and less ascent. Choose King Ludwig Way if you’re newer to walking holidays or fancy an easier route with more time for sightseeing. Pick the Lech River Trail if you’d like a slightly more Alpine feel.

Our UK team usually recommends May - June and September for both, avoiding the hottest, busiest summer weeks

  • Lech River Trail vs Across the Bavarian Alps

Across the Bavarian Alps is a step up: higher passes, more ascent and bigger daily climbs. The Lechweg stays closer to the valley, following the Lech River, so it’s less demanding but still very rewarding.

If this is your first Alpine walking holiday, start with the Lech River Trail, ideally in June or September. If you already enjoy full mountain days and want more challenge, our Across the Bavarian Alps trip in July or early September is a brilliant next step.

If you’re short on time, focus on Holzgau to Füssen for classic Lech River scenery – dramatic gorges, the long suspension bridge, and castle views near the finish.

For a wilder feel, hike the Lech am Arlberg to Lech section near Lake Formarinsee, where the river is narrower, and the Lech valley feels particularly remote.

    How difficult is the trail?
We class the Lechweg as moderate – you’ll hike 7 - 15 miles (11-24 kms) a day on good paths, with some longer days and rolling "U" sections. It’s a great choice for reasonably fit hikers, including confident first-timers in the Alps.

Yes. The trail is well signposted, popular without feeling crowded, and our app provides offline navigation. Macs Adventure handles the logistics and provides 24/7 on-trip support, which many solo travellers really value.

How do I get to and from the Lech River Trail?
Most travellers fly into Innsbruck, Zurich, or Munich. From there, trains and buses connect to Lech am Arlberg or Holzgau at the Austrian end, and from Füssen you can reach Munich or other German hubs by rail. We can arrange private transfers from Innsbruck to Lech on request.
