My journey on Ireland's oldest way-marked trail, the Wicklow Way, was one to remember. With some of the best views in Ireland, it's a chance to enjoy the highlights of Dublin before experiencing the raw beauty and charm of rural Ireland, the contrast is both stark and wonderful!
Dublin - Marlay Park - Start of Wicklow Way Trail
This popular trail takes around 8 days of walking to complete in its entirety and is well worth considering if you're thinking of exploring Ireland. I'm sharing my Wicklow Way walking tips to help you make the most of this gem of a hiking trail in Ireland.
Time in Dublin is a must!
There is plenty of history and sights on offer (Trinity College, Temple Bar Inn, and we went to visit the Castle and the Guinness Storehouse of course!). From the observatory deck of the Guinness Storehouse, you can see the Wicklow Mountains, so it’s a great place to visit before your walk and see where the trail will take you, and of course sample Ireland's most famous export.
A trip to the Guinness Storehouse is almost obligatory!
Stop to see Glendalough's Monastic City
Founded in the 6th century and worth exploring, The Wicklow Way actually goes right through it, so no excuse not to stop to view the remains, mostly of 10th - 12th Century buildings when the site was a thriving community.

Take in the best view on the Wicklow Way - Lough Tay (the "Guinness Lake")
The body of water gained its nickname for its resemblance to a pint of the black stuff! Whilst the lake itself is on private land, the best views of it can be found on the Wicklow Way, at the section where you will also pass the J. B. Malone memorial (the outdoors enthusiast responsible for the founding of the Wicklow Way).

Make sure you snap a photo at the half-way marker!
You've achieved so much, and there are still more adventures to come! An ideal photo stop to commemorate your progress.

Stock up the snacks
A huge part of the beauty of the Wicklow Way is the remote nature of the trail, but that does mean that on most days you won't pass any shops or towns during the day. It's best to be prepared and stock up with food and water the day before. On Macs Adventure Wicklow Way itineraries you'll spend 2 nights in Glenmalure where there isn't even a shop! You can arrange packed lunches at your accommodation, so do make sure you do so.
Food stops during the day are few and far between, so stock up for your journey and make the most of local pubs, bakeries, and cafes when you can!
I enjoyed the Wicklow Way immensely, it's a great way to explore Ireland, and so accessible from the hub of Dublin. Myself and my team are always happy to help you plan and arrange a walking adventure in Ireland, and you can find out more about the Wicklow Way online or contact us on hello@macsadventure.com.
