Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive in Valtournenche and overnightThere are various connections and combinations to the Aosta Valley, but the nearest airport is Turin. From there you can catch a train and then a bus to Valtournenche, which takes around 2 hours 15 in total.
The authentic mountain village of Valtournenche is at 1,524 m. In the centre of the village is the Church of S. Antonia Abate, which dates from 1450. If time permits, it is well worth a visit. On the outer walls of the church are the gravestones of the region's legendary mountain guides. Right next to the tourist office is the Maison de l'Alpage, which houses an interesting alpine museum.
This family-run hotel is located just a few steps from the centre of Valtournenche. Micke and his team warmly welcome you and, as experienced mountaineers, are at your side with advice and support. Here you'll immediately feel at home. In addition to a generous breakfast, you can also register for a delicious 4-course dinner menu. A sauna is available for relaxation.
From Valtournenche you walk through the larch forest above the Marmore River to the idyllic mountain village of Chamois or take a bus and gondola part of the way to save you approx. 5 km of walking. At 1,814 m it is one of the highest villages in Italy and the only village in the country that is inaccessible by car. The peaceful trails and streets are trodden only by feet, bikes, and the occasional tractor. It’s 1 of the 19 Alpine Pearl villages that dot the Alps of Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland. These lesser-known villages are united by their commitment to environmental sustainability, including being car-free.
The path leads up to Lago di Lod, which is very popular because of its easy accessibility. You follow the path through flowering meadows and larch forests, and you can already see the Matterhorn from some viewing points. The forest clears and you reach the picturesque little hamlet of Cheneil with its slate-roofed stone houses. From here a transfer will bring you back to Valtournanche.
 Ascent/Descent: 920m/348 m

This morning a transfer takes you back to Cheneil. From here you begin today's walk. After passing a chapel, the forest thins out and the terrain gradually becomes more alpine with gravel and rocky terrain. Look out for ibex, chamois, and marmots along the way. The view of the Matterhorn is now your constant companion. The first flowering meadows and chairlifts indicate that you are slowly approaching the Breuil-Cervinia ski area. After a curve, the Matterhorn appears in all its splendour, adorned by the small chapel of Santa Anna. Steadily descending you reach Lago Bleu - a popular photo stop. From here you follow the river to Breuil-Cervinia, which is set at 2,050m, in the very north of Italy near the Swiss border. It’s a stronghold for winter sports enthusiasts. At the foot of the Matterhorn, in the Valtournenche Valley surrounded by the Jumeaux, Chateau des Dames, Furggen, and Grandes Murailles summits. Making it a very photogenic spot.
Ascent/Descent: 487m/588m
This family-run lodge is centrally located in Cervinia. Andrea and his parents warmly welcome you. The residential units are modern and stylishly furnished and have a balcony with city or mountain views and a well-equipped kitchenette. The aparthotel offers a continental or Italian breakfast.
Today you have the choice between two options:
Walk from Hohenweg to Rifugio Orionde. Take the gondola up to Plan-Maison. From here, a mountain path leads below the Matterhorn, past glacial lakes to Rifugio Orionde. This is the starting point for many mountaineers who climb the summit of the Matterhorn. Another lake and many mountain streams accompany the way back into the valley or you can end your walk at the Rifugio and take the gondola down.
Walking distance: 10 km/6 mi, Ascent/Descent: 262 m/799 m
Alternatively, today you can cross into Switzerland and take the gondola to the Matterhorn. Don’t forget your passport! A ride on the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is a unique experience, the highest three-wire cable car in the world, which takes you up to 3,883 m. At the top, there’s a 360-degree viewing platform that gives you an incomparable view of 38 peaks that reach over 4,000 m and 14 glaciers spread between 3 countries – Italy, Switzerland, and France. On a clear day, you can see the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau to the north, the craggy north face of the Breithorn in the east, and Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe, in the west. And of course, the Matterhorn too.
Also at the top is the Glacier Palace. You’ll find it 15 m below the surface of the icefield between the Klein Matterhorn and Breithorn. It’s like a fairytale world of glistening ice crystals, with an ice slide, and a glacial crevasse you can walk along. The Breithorn Tunnel is now home to Europe’s highest cinema. Short films introduce you to all aspects of this fascinating alpine world, such as alpinism, flora and fauna, and the history of the lifts and railways.
There is a restaurant and a shop at the top too, so there is plenty to see and do during your visit. You also have the option of taking a cable car to sophisticated Zermatt in Switzerland or walk on the Matterhorn Glacier Trail. You get back with the Glacier Express Gondola.
Walk from the foot of the Matterhorn: 7 km/ 4 mi, Ascent/Descent: 172 m/514 m
If time allows, why not add an extra night or two here, so you can do the walks and take the cable car across to Zermatt for a rest day to enjoy a spa treatment and get a taste of Switzerland?

Today it's time to say goodbye to the Matterhorn. The gondola takes you to Lago Cime Bianche. Passing glacial lakes, you cross the Grad at an altitude of almost 3,000 m. It goes steadily downhill through alpine, glaciated, and wild terrain. The rushing glacier streams will accompany you to Saint Jacques, from here you take the hiking bus for the last 4 km into the Aya Valley.
There are two options for the descent into the lovely and quiet Aya Valley:
There’s a longer but less twisty path that curves into a wilder and seemingly more untouched area. You walk along beside a bubbling stream where you have to climb down over large boulders. A short detour to Alpe Verra Inferiore is worth it; The colourful meadow, surrounded by the Monte Rosa massif, is reminiscent of the fairytale meadow on Nanga Parbat in Asia.
Walking distance: 13 km/8 mi, Ascent/Descent: 183 m/1,306 m
The direct path leads down in serpentines on forest paths through sparse larch forest and is very easy to walk on. You have a wonderful view of the wide Aya Valley as you descend.
Walking distance: 11 km/ 7 mi, Ascent/Descent: 183 m/1,308 m
The centrally located hotel is run with passion by Beatrice and her family who are the fourth generation to do this. The rooms are paneled with wood in the typical mountain style. After the hike, you can relax in the garden or treat yourself to an aperitif on the terrace. If of interest, wine tastings are also on offer and in the first week of August there is “Jazz in the Garden”.
Take the hiking bus the short distance to the charming town of Antagnod. Drop off your luggage at your accommodation before starting your walk up to Barmsc, which is a popular family destination with a picnic area and pony rides. As soon as you leave the wide paths and the forest behind you, things become quieter. You’ll soon reach the tree line and a steeper gap that requires some skill and sure-footedness. A ridge path leads you on the back to the summit. Here you’ll find a large statue of the Madonna and a phenomenal view over the entire Aosta Valley. When the visibility is good you can see the peaks of Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, and Gran Paradiso - what a way to finish your walking tour!
Ascent/Descent: 1,064 m/1,064 m
Centrally located in Antagnod. This modern accommodation has a minamilistic alpine design. Enjoy the peace and quiet and the view of the mountains or relax in the wellness area with a sauna and whirlpool.
Enjoy breakfast and the mountain views. Then it's time to say goodbye to the Antagnod and the Aya Valley.
The nearest airport is Turin. You’d need to take buses and a train back to the airport taking around 2 hours 45 minutes in total.
Other Information
Is it for me?This tour is designed to give you the chance to walk the high paths with their panoramic views, crisp mountain air, and peaceful atmosphere, but without the very long and strenuous climbs that are needed on most of our alpine trips. Another great feature of this tour is that it uses lesser-known and therefore less crowded trails, so it allows you to get that authentic mountain walking experience.
The majority of the walks are along moderate trails and include regular ascents and descents, so a certain level of mountain experience is required and a level of good general fitness, but there is no need to have any technical experience. It’s best ahead of time to do some practice walks including ascents and descents like those you will experience on the trip whilst carrying your day bag.
This trip is not ideal for those with a fear of heights or vertigo sufferers. You’ll reach a maximum altitude of 2,990 m.
Classic Routes | If you’re the active, outdoorsy type, who’s interested in taking on the great routes of the world or looking for a challenge, then our Classic Routes are for you. We’re talking the West Highland Way, Tour Du Mont Blanc and the Passau to Vienna Danube Cycle Path, to name but a few!
Inn to Inn Walking | Walk from place-to-place changing accommodations each night. Generally staying in B&Bs, inns, and guesthouses.
Solo Travellers, Families with Teens
The minimum age for this tour is: 12 Years
We’ve classified this hiking trip as moderate. The level of difficulty is determined based on the entire trip, so individual days may be slightly more difficult or easier than the overall level of difficulty. Two days are a little more demanding and would fit more into the moderate to strenuous category but can skipped or made easier by taking ski lifts. You walk alternately on wide hiking trails and narrower mountain paths. You need good sure-footedness and a certain head for heights is always an advantage in the mountains. This tour is unsuitable for those afraid of heights or suffering from vertigo.
Distances
Our walks usually start and end at a central location in town (church, bus stop, etc.). Access routes to your accommodation are not included in our daily figures.
This trip requires good fitness and some alpine experience, but no technical ability is needed. The stages have different lengths, from 7 to 13 km, and require between 2.5 and 5 hours of walking. The most demanding stages take place on Day 4 from Breuil-Cervina to Champoluc and on Day 6 to Monte Zerbion, where a long but not too steep descent or ascent and descent awaits you. You can simplify both days or skip the walks entirely.
This tour is a good starter Classic walking trip if you are thinking about taking some of our more difficult mountain walks like the Tour du Mont Blanc or the Alta Via.
This holiday includes overnight accommodation in small hotels, guest houses, and B&B’s. We hand-pick the accommodation to ensure you enjoy every minute of your stay. A warm welcome, traditional hospitality, and delicious local food and drink come as standard.
Details of the accommodation we normally use are detailed on the itinerary. These are subject to availability, and early booking is recommended.
We book en suite rooms as standard. If there are no en suite rooms available in an overnight location, we may book a room with shared facilities, but we'll always let you know first if this is the case.
Alternative Accommodation
We'll always try and accommodate you at the locations detailed in your itinerary. On the odd occasion, due to limited availability, there may be an option to be accommodated at an alternative location. In the unlikely event that we must accommodate you elsewhere, we'll let you know before confirming your booking. In this case, you can change your trip dates, or we can arrange taxi transfers to and from an alternative overnight accommodation (supplement payable).
Single Rooms & Solo Walkers
This self-guided trip is available to solo walkers for a supplement and is subject to availability. If you require single rooms within your party, we'd be happy to accommodate you although there is a single room supplement payable. Solo walkers must have alpine walking experience.
Meals
Breakfast is included each morning. In Italy, this is generally a light continental breakfast. Lunch and dinner aren't included but are available from your hotel or nearby restaurants. Your accommodation may be able to provide a packed lunch on request and this can be booked on arrival. The food in Northern Italy is strongly influenced by its neighbouring countries so as well as wonderful Italian wines and cheeses, you’ll get pastries and bread more similar to those found in France and hearty sausages and stews that are reminiscent of Germany. Traditional specialties include matured Toma di Gressoney cheese melted onto polenta and Jambon de Bosses, a cured ham that has been stored in hay at high altitude for several months before being flavoured with local herbs and spices.
Additional Nights
You may want to spend some extra nights along the route, either to rest or for those with plenty of energy to explore some of the other walking opportunities nearby. We recommend extra nights in Breuil-Cevinia, as there is so much to see and do here.
You will be walking on a well-signposted walking trail on which you can discover a fascinating, culturally influenced mountain world. Navigation is straightforward as you can use the Macs Adventure app which has maps, GPS tracks, and daily route info. You will find more information on downloading the app in your Macs Adventure Account.

We'll do our best to provide a suitable alternative in line with our usual tour. In the instance that our usual accommodation isn’t available, a supplement for alternate accommodation may be payable. We'll always try our best to get you confirmed on the date you wish to travel.
Time of Year
August is the most popular month (with the locals too) and so busier in accommodation. It is not unheard of for snow to fall on higher ground during the summer, and patches of snow may still be present into July. For this reason, we offer the walk starting from July. July and August are the hottest months and carry the greatest risk of thunderstorms, which can be torrential and usually occur in the afternoon—being well-prepared and equipped for all these eventualities is essential.
There are various websites that provide useful information about the weather and climate of your destination. A good website for climate information specific to towns and countries is: www.weather2travel.com
We recommend that you check the local weather forecast daily before starting your walk. TV and radio news and corresponding websites are ideal for this purpose. In addition, your accommodation hosts are usually well-informed and will be happy to help you.
We recommend flying to Turin Airport. There are regular buses to the central rail station, which takes approx. 45 mins. You can catch a train from here to Chatillon, which takes around 1 hour 25 minutes. Then from here, you can take the bus to Valtourneche, which takes about 35 minutes.
Alternatively, you can also fly to Milan. It’s served by three airports: Malpensa (MXP, 45 km from the city centre), Linate (LIN, 7 km from the city centre), and Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY, 50 km from the city centre).
From MXP you can catch the Malpensa Express train from the airport to Milan City Centre, which takes around an hour and runs regularly. From BGY you can take a bus into central Milan taking just less than an hour.  From LIN there’s also a bus to central Milan taking approx. 30mins.
From Milan centre, you can take the train via Turin, which takes about 2 hours and then you follow the same instructions shown above from Turin. It takes around 5 hours in total.
You can find Italian train information on Trenitalia.
From Antagnod or Periasc you can take the bus to Verres, which takes around 50 minutes. From where you take the train to Turin, it takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Alternatively, you could take a taxi to Chatillon which takes about 40 minutes, and then catch the train to Turin which takes about 1 hour 25 minutes. Either way, you then need to take the bus back to the airport, which takes approx. 35 minutes.
If you fancy a journey that is more of an experience in itself then why not take a taxi to nearby Chatillon and catch the train from here to some of Europe's main hubs? You can get to Turin in 1 hour 25 minutes, then on to Paris in a further 5 hours 40 minutes. From here you could also travel across the channel to London St Pancras which takes around another 2 hours 25 minutes. Websites such as Trainline, and Rome 2 Rio are useful tools for arranging rail travel.
Your bags will be collected from your accommodation each day and moved onto your overnight accommodation. Except from Champluc, when you’ll take your main luggage with you to Antagnod on the hiking bus. Don’t worry though, this is a straightforward journey, and you can drop your bag off at your centrally located hotel on arrival, ready to spend your day walking to the summit of Monte Zerbion. Please limit your luggage to one bag of up to 20kg per person.
At Macs Adventure, we work in partnership with many luggage transfer providers who set a limit on how many bags/suitcases they will transfer per person, and also the weight of the bag/suitcase. Your booking includes the transfer of 1 bag per person and the weight of your luggage allowed is specific to the destination you will be travelling to. This is why it’s very important that you read the luggage information specific to your tour before departure. If you don’t stick to these limits, there’s a chance you’ll be charged locally both for extra bags and/or if they're too heavy. This limitation can be a challenge, especially as airlines generally have limits that are higher. However, our luggage providers have reasons for these limits (usually due to the Health and Safety of their employees), which we must respect.
Extra Nights
You can add extra nights anywhere during the trip. If time allows, we recommend spending more time in Breuil-Cevinia, as there is so much to see and do here.
Tourist Taxes
In some places, tourist or local taxes may apply. Wherever possible, Macs will cover these taxes for you in advance, but this is not always possible, and you must pay it directly at your accommodation. The amount varies depending on the location and number of nights spent there and is usually between €1-3 per person per night.
In your info pack, you’ll find a detailed kit list of the walking equipment you need, such as good hiking shoes, functional clothing, waterproofs, and a daypack.
We recommend that you book quickly once you have decided on a trip, as we have carefully selected small and authentic accommodation for you. As a result, these can be fully booked very quickly. However, we'll always try and accommodate your plans.
Should a problem arise during your trip, we and our local partners are at your side with advice and action. You can reach us at any time during your trip on the telephone numbers given in your information pack.
Most of the walks are along moderate trails and include regular ascents (between 180-1,040 m) and descents (between 30-1,300 m), so a certain level of mountain experience is required and a level of good general fitness, but there is no need to have any technical ability.  Two days fit more into a moderate to strenuous grade, but these can be skipped or easily simplified. These are day 4 from Breuil-Cervina to Champoluc and day 6 up Monte Zerbion. This trip is not suitable for those with a fear of heights or vertigo sufferers.
No problem! You can use public transport and local taxis to reach your next overnight stop. Full details are included in your info pack, or you can call us for a hand in making arrangements.
Unfortunately, we’re unable to accommodate walkers with dogs as many of the accommodation providers we use don’t accept pets and several sections of the way are closed to dogs as they're permissive paths through farmland.
You'll need good walking shoes/boots (ideally waterproof), comfortable walking clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers, a daypack, hats/gloves, a Water 2 Go bottle, etc. Our info pack has a list of all the equipment you'll need, along with some helpful suggestions.
Each morning when a luggage transfer is required, just leave your main bag in the reception area/luggage storage area and we'll have it transferred to the next location. Please limit the weight of your luggage to 20 kg per bag (one piece per person).
