Sample the celebrated wines of Croatia while you explore the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dubrovnik's fortified Old Town.

This is a diverse and relaxed tour that allows you to experience the historic city of Dubrovnik as well as beautiful coastal walking and the undiscovered villages and vineyards of the Konavle countryside.

Explore Dubrovnik’s gleaming limestone streets, medieval fortress towers and high city walls during your 2hr private guided tour, before setting sail for the nearby island of Lokrum where you can spend the afternoon walking through the botanic gardens and stopping for a swim in one of the island’s hidden bays.

The following day is spent on Lopud, one of the Elaphite Islands, where you can discover old forts, churches, botanical garden, the magnificent views over the cliffs. It is also famous for having the one of the best beaches in Dubrovnik.

The beautiful Peljesac peninsula is also included and here you can visit local wineries by private tour and sample their intriguing reds before a traditional lunch and transfer back to Dubrovnik. The next 3 days are based near the town of Cavtat, where you will follow the trails through olive groves and scented pine forests, past small traditional villages and discover ‘authentic’ Croatia.

DAY 1: Arrive in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik Airport is served by many direct flights from across the UK with Jet2, EasyJet, Monarch, FlyBe & British Airways. Long-haul destinations connect via Zagreb. You will be met at Dubrovnik airport and transferred to your accommodation. The rest of the day is yours to do as you wish.

Overnight: Pension Ivana, Dubrovnik


Pension Ivana is a traditional stone house surrounded by a lovely garden. Within walking distance of the Old Town, it is located near the bay of Gruž and peninsula of Lapad. All rooms are en-suite and equipped with air conditioning, internet and Satellite TV.


DAY 2: Guided Tour of the Old Town and visit the island of Lokrum

After breakfast you’ll be picked up from your hotel and transferred to Dubrovnik’s Old Town, a stunning fortified medieval city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. On arrival at the city gates you will be met by a local English-speaking guide for a two-hour private tour of the Old Town, weaving through its limestone streets and overlooking the terracotta roofs.


You will then have time for a leisurely lunch before a quick boat ride to the island of Lokrum, where you’re free to wander around the small island. There are walking paths up to the island’s peak (Fort Royal), as well as through the botanical gardens and along hidden bays perfect for swimming. Catch the last boat to Dubrovnik and either walk or take a city bus back to your accommodation.

DAY 3: Walking on Lopud

This morning take the ferry from Dubrovnik port to Lopud island, (45 min). Once on Lopud you will be surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, old stone houses, churches and number of noble palaces. Lopud is the perfect gateway from Dubrovnik for a day hike. Take a loop walk around the island where you will discover picturesque bays with palm trees and citruses, old forts, churches, a botanical garden, the magnificent views over the cliffs.

DAY 4: Wine Tasting on the Peljesac Peninsula

If the names Dingač, Postup and Plavac mean nothing to you, they soon will as you discover the (rarely exported) intriguing reds of the Croatian vineyards. You and a guide will visit the picturesque Peljesac peninsula, the heart of South Dalmatia.


After a private ‘tasting tour’ visiting local wine producers around the small villages of Ponikve and Potomje you continue to the Medieval town of Ston, where you have lunch in a local restaurant before returning to Dubrovnik in the afternoon. Ston’s city wall surrounds the town in a pentagonal shape and at 5.5km is the second longest wall in Europe.

DAY 5: Walk from Cavtat to Radovčići

After breakfast you will be picked up from your accommodation and transferred to Cavtat or one of its surrounding villages, which will be your base for the next three days. Cavtat is a pretty fishing town in the Konavle countryside, originally founded by ancient Greeks from Issa. The hiking trail starts in Cavtat and continues past small villages, forests, fields and vineyards and through the traditional village of Čilipi where folk songs and dances are performed every Sunday.


The walk continues through the fertile valleys to Radovčići, from here you can choose to return the same way you came (15km) or take a local bus back to Cavtat.

Overnight: Guesthouse Katija, Cavtat area


Overlooking the Konavle valley and Mount Snježnica (1234 m), Guesthouse Katija comprises of 3 rustic houses, an old well and a small botanical garden with pleasant Mediterranean plants. Traditionally furnished, it offers wireless internet and Satellite TV.


DAY 6: Wine Tasting & Village Visit

Enjoy a day of wine-tasting in the village of Komaji, where you will visit the vineyards and wine cellar of a local wine producer and taste a variety of wines, liqueurs and some food produce, such as regional ham and cheeses. In the afternoon you depart for Cavtat; your transfer is via a scenic countryside driving route.

DAY 7: Free Day/Excursion/Walk

Today you can relax and enjoy the area with a free day to yourself. There are plenty of hiking trails to follow if you’re feeling energetic, or you could while away the day in one of the many cafes on the palm-line promenade of Cavtat. Alternatively you can book an excursion with our local partner, such as hiking Mount Snijeznica (Montenegro) or visiting the beautiful city of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) - to be booked and paid for locally.

DAY 8: Depart

A transfer to Dubrovnik airport is included.

Accommodation

The accommodation on this walk consists of small charming family run guesthouses. All offer a warm welcome to walkers, traditional hospitality and an authentic experience.


Alternative Accommodation

During the high season, you might be booked into alternative accommodations which are not listed in the description. Any alternative accommodation will be of the same or better standard as those described.


Single Rooms & Solo Walkers

If you require single rooms within your party we would be happy to accommodate you although there is a single room supplement payable.


Unfortunately this holiday is not available for solo walkers.


Meals

A delicious breakfast is included each morning. Lunch is included on the wine tasting trips (days 4 & 6) but not for the rest of the tour. Dinner is not included. Your route notes and local information have details and suggestions for lunchtime and evening dining.

Time of Year

Spring in Croatia is sublime and April, May and June are absolutely lovely; July and August can be hot so you will have to start early to miss the heat of the day, although the towns and villages are busier with many seasonal festivals on which is great. You can view weather details for the region here. Please note that at the very beginning and end of the season (early April and end of October) any swimming pools at accommodations may be closed and restaurant offerings may be more limited during this time.


Single Rooms & Solo Walkers

If you require single rooms within your party we would be happy to accommodate you although there is a single room supplement payable. This holiday is unfortunately unsuitable for solo walkers due to the nature of the terrain.


Grade & Terrain

This walking tour is graded easy to moderate. Although you have the opportunity to walk each day, most days you can do as little or as much as you like. There are two full-days of walking, which are both around 15km. The terrain is mainly flat with some hills; the maximum ascent is 200m.


Navigation

Some of the walks on this trip are way-marked but many are not and you will need to follow the route notes and maps supplied. You should be confident using a map and compass.


Baggage Transfers

Your bags will be transferred between your accommodation as per your itinerary. We ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to 20kg per person.


Travel Insurance

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity and emergency evacuation and hospital care.


General Information

The distances and ascent/descents are approximations of the recommended routes. Please be prepared by packing all necessary items, for example, proper rain gear (jacket and pants), sun hat, sunscreen. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, and a day pack.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised Croatia is extremely popular especially during July/August. You will find up to date availability on our website and we will always try and accommodate your plans so just ask.

How fit do I need to be?

This walking holiday is graded easy to moderate so you should enjoy an active lifestyle to get the most from this holiday. If you are unable to walk on any day you can use taxis or public transport to move onto the next night's accommodation.
