Secret Trails of Ibiza and Formentera Self Guided Walking Holiday

  • Discover the natural beauty of the “secret” side of Ibiza
  • Walk to hidden coves of golden sand and turquoise waters
  • Enjoy lunches of grilled fish and paella at relaxed chiringuito beach bars
  • Relax in comfort at boutique hotels and traditional Ibizan agroturismo
  • Chill out on the beaches of exclusive Formentera, an island paradise!

Walk past hidden coves with turquoise waters, through tranquil pine forest, and rural countryside to discover a secret side of Ibiza, a world away from the well known ‘party island’. Round this off with a few days relaxing in the island paradise of Formentera, famed for its white sandy beaches and azure sea.

Visit some of the most picturesque coves and beaches on Ibiza including Cala Mestella and Cala Xarraca, with their little chiringuito beach cafes. Enjoy strolling through the green countryside passing pretty farmsteads accompanied only by the sound of birdsong. Finish this perfectly by hopping on the short ferry to exclusive Formentera and enjoying a few days relaxing at your comfortable beach hotel.

Day 1: Arrive Sant Carles de Peralta

From Ibiza Airport in the south of the island it is just a 30min transfer to the small town of Sant Carles de Peralta where you will be based for your first couple of nights.

This small village, with a pretty 18th century  whitewashed church at its centre, is a laidback little place with a distinctly bohemian vibe. You will stay in one of two traditional agroturismos both of which lie just outside the village.

Overnight: Sant Carles de Peralta

Day 2: Loop Walk to Cala Mestella

Your first day’s walk takes you from the village of Sant Carles through scented pine forest to the picturesque Cala Mestella—a small sheltered inlet perfect for swimming! Enjoy some tasty grilled fish and fresh salad at the “El Bigotes” chiringuito before setting off again.

Continue inland through peaceful woodland and past the 17th century finca Ca’n Andreu (now an interesting farmhouse museum) back to Sant Carles de Peralta.

Walk: 9.5km, 2-3hrs, 205m ascent/180m descent

Overnight: Sant Carles de Peralta

Day 3: Walk to Sant Joan de Labritja

Changing tack slightly, your walk is entirely inland today heading out of Sant Carles on a trail which crosses the Serra de Sant Vicent ridge. Reach the small Iglesia de Sant Vicent church before following trails through typically rural Ibizan landscapes featuring dry stone walls, springs and wells.

Enjoy the tranquillity of this section, accompanied by the sound of birdsong and nature before reaching the  village of Sant Joan de Labritja.

Staying in this traditional  village is like taking a step back in time to when Ibiza was a sleepy Spanish island. If you are lucky enough to be here on a Sunday, witness the village come alive when a thriving artisan market sets up in the village square.

Walk: 14.5km, 480m Ascent, 364m Descent, 4-5 hours.

Overnight: Sant Joan de Labritja

Day 4: Walk to Portinatx

Head back to the coast, enjoying a lovely walk from Sant Joan to the Portinatx peninsula. Leave Sant Joan on old cart tracks to reach Cala d’en Serra, a gorgeous bay with azure coloured waters, a white sandy beach and a tiny little beach bar serving refreshments—heaven! Continue along clifftop paths to the distinctive working lighthouse at Far des Moscarter with its black and white stripes.

Finish at the resort town of Portinatx where there are plenty of options for refreshments before taking the bus or a taxi back to Sant Joan de Labritja.

Walk: 11km, 120m ascent, 318m descent, 3-4 hours

Overnight: Sant Joan de Labritja

Day 5: Loop Walk from Cala de Sant Vicent

Starting in the little seaside resort of Cala St Vicent, you will walk across its coastal promenade before rising steeply up a road and to the edge of a thick forest. Entering the forest, the air is thick with the scent of pine and wildflowers, the welcome shade provides a dappled light to the winding paths. Dropping out of the forest you will walk across exposed ochre brown clifftops rising up above the azure, yacht speckled sea before rising up back through the forest and down to the sea.

Back in Sant Joan de Labritja enjoy a final night and perhaps sample the delights of the Giri Café, a fabulous restaurant with a great reputation for serving high quality Mediterranean cuisine.

Walk: 8.5km, 240m ascent/descent, 3 hours

Overnight: Sant Joan de Labritja

Day 6: Walk to Sant Miquel de Balansat

A fantastic days walk filled with variety today. Head along dirt tracks through the forest and then past beautiful farmsteads to Cala Xarraca, one of the most isolated bays in Ibiza, surrounded by green pineforests and rocky paths and with crystalline waters. Climb out of the bay on an asphalt path and through a pristine part of the island and enjoy wonderful views over the Northern coast.

A highlight of your day is sure to be Es Calo de s’Illa or “Moon Beach” so called because of it’s rocky moon-like landscape featuring small craters. This is a perfect place to stop for a picnic lunch before a detour inland, via forested valley, takes you to the beach at Cala Benirras. Continue to the town of Sant Miquel de Balansat where you can retire to your comfortable accommodation for the night.

Walk: 19km, 495m ascent, 525m descent,  6-7 Hours.

Overnight: Sant Miquel de Balansat

Day 7: Loop Walk to Es Portitxol Beach

A short transfer (15 min) will take you to the start point of your walk today which leads  you to the beautiful Es Portitxol beach, one of the most “secret” beaches of the island. Follow cliffside paths down to this delightful cove where you will find fishermen working away at the characteristic fishermen’s huts.

A fairly steep ascent takes you out of the cove to a beautiful wide valley for a few kilometres of delightful inland walking past an impressive old lime kiln. Reach an amazing viewpoint over Es Portitxol and the famous Na Xamena. Returning to the start point, you will be picked up and transferred back to your hotel for one final night on this beautiful island.

Walk: 10.5km, 465m Ascent/Descent,  4 Hours

Overnight: Sant Miquel de Balansat

Day 8: Onward Travel

Check out after breakfast and a private taxi transfer will take you to the port in Eivissa Town (25min) from where you will catch a fast ferry to Formentera taking just 30 minutes. Before you know it you will have arrived in the port of La Savina and a quick taxi journey will take you to your beachside hotel.

Formentera is famed for its beautiful white sandy beaches and azure waters, and is the perfect place to relax after a week of walking. Just 20km long, it is easy to explore the island over a few days. We recommend hiring a bike if you fancy keeping the legs going as this is a great way to get round the whole island, with quiet roads and tracks leading you to many of the small coves.

Day 9: Free Day in Formentera

It is entirely up to you how you choose to spend your time over the next couple of days. However, one recommendation for today is exploring the peninsula around the La Mola lighthouse. Life moves at a slower pace here and as well as the lighthouse it is well worth visitingn the Moli Vell de la Mola, a traditional windmill and the Punta Roja cliffs enjoying magnificent coastal views.

At night enjoy delicous seafood for dinner - a typical Formentera dish is the tasty Peix Sec (dried fish) which comes highly recommended!

Day 10: Free Day in Formentera

On your final day in Formentera, it will be all too tempting to kick back and relax by the beach. However, if you do wish to explore further, head to the vibrant little capital Sant Fransesc or Es Pujols beach. From here it is possible to walk to the Estany Pudent, a large salt water lagoon whicih attracts varied birdlife.

Enjoy a final night on your island paradise perhaps sampling some of the delicious Formentera wine or herb liquer.

Day 11: Ferry to Ibiza, Onward Travel

Check out after breakfast and a short taxi journey (15min) will take you back to the port at La Savina where you catch the ferry back over to Ibiza for your onward travel.

Time of Year

Ibiza and Formentera enjoy a pleasant Mediterranean climate perfect for walking.  If you prefer slightly cooler temperatures and want to see the countryside at its most green then April and May are the perfect time to travel. We do not offer this tour in July and August due to the fact that the high temperatures make it too uncomfortable for walking. September is a great time to visit, and the days are still lovely and warm. In October, it starts to cool down again but is still very pleasant during the day with cooler nights.
