Hiking Together: Supporting the South West Coast Path, One Step at a Time

When you set off along the South West Coast Path, it’s easy to get swept up in the dramatic cliffs, the endless sea views, and the feeling that you’ve stepped into somewhere wild and timeless. But behind every ocean-hugging stretch of trail is a team of passionate people working tirelessly to protect it.

In this next chapter of our People Behind the Scenery series, we’re shining a light on one of the organizations helping to keep this incredible route open, accessible, and thriving: the South West Coast Path Association.

To learn more about the work happening behind the scenes, we spoke to Lorna, National Trail Officer for the South West Coast Path, about the role the association plays in caring for the trail - and how Macs Adventure and our travelers help support that work.

Because the truth is, these landscapes don’t stay this beautiful by accident.

A Path Shaped by Nature - and Protected by People

Stretching for 630 miles around the coast of southwest England, the South West Coast Path is the UK’s longest National Trail. It winds its way past rugged cliffs, sandy coves, charming fishing villages, and some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the country. But maintaining a trail like this is no small task.

Storms reshape the coastline, cliffs erode, and sections of the path can shift or disappear entirely. Bridges need repairing, signage replaced, and routes occasionally rerouted to keep hikers safe while protecting the fragile coastal environment.

As Lorna explains in the below video, caring for such a dynamic landscape requires constant work and collaboration between organizations, local communities, and volunteers.

That’s where the South West Coast Path Association comes in.

As a charity dedicated to protecting, improving, and championing the trail, the association works year-round to help safeguard the path for the thousands of hikers who set out along it every year.

A Partnership Built on Shared Values

At Macs Adventure, we believe hiking vacations are about more than simply reaching the end of a trail. They’re about connecting people with landscapes, communities, and the stories that make a place special.

Our partnership with the South West Coast Path Association reflects that belief.

For every traveler who walks the South West Coast Path with Macs Adventure, we donate $5 directly to the association. These contributions help support the ongoing conservation, maintenance, and protection of the trail.

As Lorna shares, support like this plays an important role in ensuring the path remains accessible and enjoyable for hikers now and into the future.

It means that every journey along the trail doesn’t just create lasting memories for our travelers - it also helps support the work that keeps the path open for everyone.

The Power of Hiking Vacations

One of the most remarkable things about the South West Coast Path is the way it connects people.

Hikers arrive from all over the world, drawn by the promise of sea air, spectacular scenery, and the quiet rhythm of life on the trail. Along the way, they support small coastal communities - staying in local guesthouses, eating in village cafés, and discovering hidden corners of the southwest.

But their journey also helps sustain the path itself.

Through partnerships like ours with the South West Coast Path Association - and through the support of hikers choosing to explore the trail - vital funding goes back into maintaining and protecting this extraordinary landscape.

Every step becomes part of a much bigger story.

Protecting the Trail for Future Adventures

Standing on a windswept cliff along the South West Coast Path, watching the waves roll endlessly towards the shore, it’s easy to feel a deep sense of connection to the landscape.

It’s a reminder that places like this deserve care and protection.

Thanks to the dedication of the South West Coast Path Association, the work of people like Lorna and her team, and the footsteps of hikers from around the world, this extraordinary trail continues to inspire new adventures every day.

And at Macs Adventure, we’re proud that our travelers help play a part in supporting that work.

Because some of the most meaningful travel experiences aren’t just about where you go - but how you help protect it along the way.
