Being completely flat, the terrain makes cycling fun and easy for all ages and abilities. Book a Bike & Barge holiday in Holland to cover more ground than by cycling alone, leaving plenty of time to discover the charming cities. There is no better way to immerse yourself in the Dutch biking culture.

Explore the canals and world-class museums of Amsterdam before making your way to Bruges in Belgium on our Amsterdam to Bruges Bike & Barge. Or cycle and cruise Northern Holland and the Frisian Islands on our Northern Circuit Bike & Barge trip. Sample Dutch cheese in the city of Gouda as you discover Southern Holland on the Southern Circuit Bike & Barge trip. If you would like to experience the world-famous flower fields in bloom, Tulips in Holland Bike & Barge should be on your list.

    5 Traditional Dutch Foods

These mini pancakes can be enjoyed year-round and are traditionally topped with icing sugar and melted butter. You will come across stalls selling these fluffy pancakes (poffertjeskramen) in towns and cities across the Netherlands. Enjoy them freshly baked and while they're still hot!

Dating back to the 15th century, this warm and savoury dish has become a staple in Dutch cuisine. It consists of mashed potatoes combined with root vegetables, such as turnip or carrot, or with leafy greens, like spinach or kale. Perfect for dinner and traditionally served with smoked sausage (rookworst).

Possibly best described as a type of croquette, this popular meaty snack is breaded, then deep-fried. Head to a cosy Dutch pub to order these with a beer of your choice for the ultimate pairing! In recent years, meat-free and dairy-free alternatives can be found in many restaurants.

    Hollandse Nieuwe

Directly translated as 'New Dutch Herring' - a dish of pickled raw herring. This dish is definitely more common in Northern European countries! Grab some Hollandse Nieuwe at one of the fishmongers on the coast to enjoy this healthy and much-loved delicacy.

This is the Dutch equivalent of a sugary doughnut. These deep-fried balls are sprinkled with icing sugar and sometimes also contain raisins. It's a Dutch tradition to have these just after midnight on New Year's Eve with a glass of champagne.

    Art and Culture in Amsterdam

Holland has an abundance of international art and culture with interesting galleries displaying world-famous paintings, and an exciting film and music scene. Keep reading for our top art and culture experiences while visiting Amsterdam!

The Rijksmuseum - one of the most visited attractions in Amsterdam and home to works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh. 8000+ masterworks of the Dutch Golden Age are on display and the building itself has a spectacular interior design.

The Anne Frank House - former house and now a biographical museum dedicated to Jewish diarist Anne Frank who grew up during World War II. A visit to the canal-side building is a moving experience as you can access the Secret Annex (Anne's hiding place) and see Anne's diary.

The Royal Palace - situated on one of the main squares, Dam Square, the palace is the official reception palace of King Willem-Alexander. Dating back to the 17th century this prestigious building is a Dutch icon. Explore its interior and exhibitions which are open to the public year-round.

Floating Flower Market - this attraction dates back to 1862 and is the only floating flower market in the world. Smell the sweet aroma of fresh flowers and watch the artistic display of different colours. This is the best place to buy Dutch tulips (Tip: buy tulip bulbs to plant at home for an authentic souvenir!)

  • FAQ's: Holland Bike & Boat
    FAQ's: Holland Bike & Boat

Q: Will there be WIFI on the boats?
A: Yes, there generally is, but this will be limited in bandwidth and signal depends on the location along the river, the sea or canal. When proximity is closer to towns the signal is stronger, but it can be intermittent on the move.

Q: What is the food like on board?
A: The food throughout your tour will be local and typical of the region in question. If you should have any dietary requirements, please inform us at the time of booking so we can arrange for catering to you. The on board catering is always highly complimented, and the social aspect of eating with your crew-mates is part of the fun experience!

Q: Can I start my tour on any day?
A: On these tours you need to catch the boat! Depending on the boat, its departures can be on various days of the week. It is best to check our tour pages for the available days.

Q: Do I need to bring a helmet?
A: We advise that you never cycle without a helmet, and suggest that you bring your own helmet for the trip. This is more hygienic, and also more comfortable. Helmets are generally available to rent, please inform us at the time of booking so this can be arranged.

Q: How far in advance should I book?
A: As early as you can! We do not work with boats that are large-scale cruise liners, they are smaller vessels designed to sail on rivers or coastal waters. Therefore, there are limited cabins. At the start of each year, we usually already have departures booked out for the summer season, so we would recommend booking as early as you can.

Please sign up to our email list to be the first to hear about the release of bike and boat departures and any other cycling information.
