Why self guided?

At Macs Adventure, most of our trips are on a self-guided basis, which we believe is the best way to travel for a truly immersive and authentic experience. You may be wondering exactly what that entails? Well let us explain!...

Independent-minded walkers and cyclists will agree that a self-guided walking or cycling tour is the very best way to travel and can't be beaten for value, experience and sense of achievement. Our self-guided tours come with everything you need to make for an adventure-filled and rewarding holiday; accommodation, baggage transfer where required, and an informative pre-departure pack, turn-by-turn route notes, destination guides and detailed maps which follow carefully planned itineraries on the best routes.

You don't have a guide accompanying you, but a self-guided holiday gives you the flexibility to choose your traveling companions, how far you’d like to walk/cycle each day, and of course travel dates to suit you. You can tailor your itinerary, accommodation and activities to exactly match your requirements and interests. Although you will be traveling independently, our local and/or US teams are there to support you and are only a phone call away in case you need any assistance during your trip.

  • Why Self Guided?

This Video shows you benefits of taking a self guided trip with Macs Adventure.  We offer the perfect balance of experiencing the freedom of going where you want and taking the day at your own pace, which having all the logistics of your trip tied up, so you can have a hassle-free time.

1. Sense of achievement

The feel-good factor of completing a walk or cycle over several days or even weeks is hard to beat. Armed with easy-to-follow maps and route notes, flex your navigation skills and use your (wits!) and wisdom to follow superb tried-and-tested routes. Return home with an immense sense of achievement, and with plenty of tales to impress your friends and family!

2. Unbeatable value (cheaper than a guided trip)

Self-guided walking and cycling tours offer unbeatable value and are often half the price of guided tours. We can keep the price low because you are not paying for a guide/driver and associated costs.

4. Choose your own travel companions

You can choose to travel alone, with your partner or family, your best friend or even fifteen of your favourite colleagues. And although they may not be (quite!) perfect at least you know who you’re travelling with.

5. Go at your own pace

Most of our routes offer a range of itineraries to suit everyone from the leisurely to the energetic, which means that you can walk or cycle as much or as little as you wish. Go at your own pace; stopping as you please to indulge that passion for wine or whisky, ancient ruins or modern architecture.

6. A more authentic experience

By travelling independently you will naturally interact with more people; whether checking directions with a passing friendly face or chatting with the locals over a coffee or cuppa. OK, you might take a wrong turn occasionally, but you will have your own personal special memories (not just seen through the window of a tour bus or by following the crowd).

7. Stay independent, but with support if/when you need it

Thankfully, things very rarely go awry but when you do need some help one of our local team is only a phone call away and they can help to resolve any issue that may have arisen. So you can relax and focus on enjoying your holiday to the full.

8. Stay in small, high quality accommodations of character

We can book those fantastic small hotels, inns and B&B's that larger groups simply can't. Staying in authentic small properties gives you a real insight into local life; you may find yourself sitting around the kitchen table tasting the family olive oil or discovering the special secret recipe for Scottish shortbread.

App that worked, Accommodation at Parkhead Station just rubbish.

Routes were very good, as has been our experience generally with Macs. The erroneous map app was disappointing - fortunately I caught it when I compared it to the turn-by-turn directions for that day - but the fact that no one could correct it for another 24 hours was completely unsatisfactory. The staff is generally very good and always tries their best, but you get the distinct impression that they are severely understaffed - no one picks up the phone half the time and you get shunted to voicemail, which often was not responded to for days. Most disappointing of all was the lodging. The Royal in Dunkeld was a dump, and should never have been on Mac's approved list. When I had asked for an upgrade weeks earlier based on their marginal on-line reviews (I agreed to pay any uncharge) I was told nothing was available. I later learned this was not the case when I actually inquired out of curiosity when we were in Dunkeld, but of course it was too late to change. It's like they just don't want to take the time or effort to accommodate such requests, but the very marginal lodging detracted from the entire trip.

Despite busy time of year, always came back to us and kept us informed. They were more helpful by phone when we were on holiday, having caught Covid on board the ship, than the local partner was initially.

Fabulous organisation and accommodation from Macs Adventures yet again.
  • Mr Mark Francis 29/06/2022
We had a great time on the Macs Adventure trips. We utilized their services for both the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre in Italy. The hotels were good, the baggage transfer services worked flawlessly. They even managed to get a hat to us that we had left behind in the room. Their schedule was a great starting place for us but allows flexibility to make some changes and do things differently if you wished. For instance we did one of the hikes on a different day and added a bicycle tour one day.

For the overnight accommodations my rating is nearly a five, as most were really quite good. For the connections my rating is a 4. My biggest issue is with the daily informatin packets. These were difficult to follow. Most issues were addressed by phone calls during each of our three tours.

I walked the Finisterre with Macs after first walking to the Espiritual with another company to Santiago. The difference was remarkable. This was not my first trip with Macs and will not be my last. The hotels were brilliant and the breakfasts were well catered and my walking companions and I were always in the same place for the evening. The bags were delivered as promised. I will contrast with the other company to show you the difference: Macs: same hotel every night for my travel companions and myself Other company: different hotels for my travel companions and myself for three nights out of eight nights Macs: quality of hotels was brilliant. Clean, good locations Other company: Some hotels were on par with MACS but others were places I did not want to sleep in and some of the staff did not seem happy we were staying there when we walked in after a long walk Macs: breakfast was always a good spread Other company: very much luck of the draw Macs: guidance for the route was very good Other company: We needed to get onto our phones at times to find the right path Macs: provided the Pilgrim book Other company: We needed to go to a church to obtain the Pilgrim book Macs delivered on my previous walk with them as well and I will be booking further walks with Macs. I found the Finisterre a much better walk for the Spiritual aspects even though there were less churches. The Finisterre is a road less travelled and the Espiritual is also not as well travelled but the Finisterre was a highlight of the recent walks I have done. Do the Finisterre before the secret gets out how great it is!

  • Mr Mark Foley 29/06/2022
They did exactly what we ordered and paid for. No hiccups, no disappointments and even the weather was great throughout, though I'm not sure they fixed that ...

The coordination, communication and accommodations were 5 star.
  • Anonymous 28/06/2022
If you want to walk long distance paths without the hassles of heavy backpacks, etc. Mac's are the guys for you, sorted all the accomodation and baggage transfers for me on my recent adventure. Couldn't fault the organisation or service, everything you need us provided.
  • Ms Emily Goldfarb 28/06/2022
I love Macs Adventure! I love everything about this kind of travel. On our own, at our own pace, not with a group but with the arrangements excellently taken care of by you, wonderful inns, good maps, the route set out for us and on a path that goes through wonderful countryside, villages, with views and adventures galore. Delivering our bags from place to place and all for a very reasonable price. For people who like hiking, this is the way to do it!
  • Mr Kenneth Airlie 27/06/2022
Did what was promised, variety of accommodation but all were suitable, baggage transport was great suit case always waiting for us. I would use this company again
  • Anonymous 26/06/2022
They delivered what they said they would - good service, maps, nice accommodations, etc.
  • Mrs Annabel Golden 23/06/2022
The Service from Macs was very, very good. All the pre-trip stuff went very well, except for one thing. We were leaving our home a month before our trip started (travelling elsewhere). I kept telling you that we needed the materials sent to us earlier than you usually would, but you didn't. The package even missed us at our first hotel.
  • Mrs Julia Champion de Crespigny 23/06/2022
Wonderful walk. Superb scenery. Accomodation ok but quite basic. iPhone app worked quite well but pleased to have the printed back up.
  • Mr Andrew Hall 23/06/2022
Superbly organised, lovely accommodation, great luggage transfers and the online maps were brilliant!
  • Anonymous 22/06/2022
This was our second Macs Adventure’s experience and it did not disappoint. From my initial contact through to our final departure, everything was well communicated and planned and made our holiday so enjoyable knowing that Macs had done the ‘hard work’ for us. All we had to do was sit back and enjoy the ride.
