Discovering Lofoten

Now in my fourth year at Macs Adventure, I'm lucky enough to have travelled to many beautiful places in Europe writing route notes for our self-guided adventures. However, when my partner, Craig, and I journeyed to the Lofoten Islands the landscape of this Arctic archipelago struck us as utterly different to anything we'd ever seen before. Just check out some of the images we captured!

Our first taste of the staggering Lofoten landscape after hiking up to the Reinebringen viewpoint overlooking Kjerkfjorden and its surrounding mountains.

But the striking scenery isn't the whole story - there's something special in the atmosphere of this ancient Norwegian landscape. Combine this with delicious cuisine, the relaxed outlook of the locals, and out-of-this-world hikes to make your trip simply unforgettable!

The hiking ...

The hiking in Lofoten is simply spectacular! Our Walking the Lofoten Islands drive & hike trip lets you explore the islands at your our pace.

Choose from a variety of walks that let you take in the best of what the Lofoten have to offer - rugged coastal routes, forest trails, mountain ridges, and a few summits thrown in!

Although this is a drive & hike trip it's not to be underestimated! Experienced hikers will relish the rugged and varied terrain, Craig and I certainly did. The lack of a good path network on the islands is part of the experience, and adds to the wonderful remote-feeling that the Lofoten exude.

The driving ...

Driving is certainly the easiest (and best!) way to get around on the archipelago. As it will likely be the weather that helps you decide what to do each day - you are at 68°N in the Arctic Circle after all - having a car gives you the freedom you need to do what you like. Between walks why not visit the Viking Museum near Svolvær, tour some remote art galleries, or spend a day discovering the food scene on the islands?

Having never driven myself outside of the UK I was unsure about driving abroad but, the locals have a relaxed and courteous attitude and we had no problems at all! There are plenty of rental cars (and camper-vans) about - a popular road-tripping destination with European visitors so you won't be alone. Off the E10, the single carriageway road that winds it's north through the islands, the roads vary from narrow 2-lane roads to single-track with passing places. These must the most incredibly scenic roads that I have ever driven!

This is a once-in-a-lifetime trip! And with it's unbelievable landscapes, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, delicious seafood, unique accommodations, and wildlife (think white-tailed sea eagles and moose) there's something for everyone. What are you waiting for?! Check out our tour page here or contact a specialist to begin your booking journey.
