Why the Tour du Mont Blanc is a Must-Do

Since Swiss geologist de Saussure first walked around the Mont Blanc Massif in 1767 the Tour du Mont Blanc has built on its reputation as one of the world’s classic treks.

It's one of our top 5 favorites at Macs Adventure (and there is a lot of competition for those top spots!).

Here, our team share their reasons to take on the Tour du Mont Blanc:

Heleen Bosch

Macs Adventure Health & Safety Executive

"Whenever someone asks me what’s so great about the Tour du Mont Blanc, I struggle, I just can't find the words! The scenery is literally breathtaking when you’re surrounded by the peaks of the Mont Blanc massif.. it’s astonishing."

Erin Connor

Customer Experience Manager at Macs Adventure "For me, the best thing about the Tour du Mont Blanc was the sense of achievement having walked through three different countries over a relatively short period of time and with some pretty challenging terrain. Doing so with all the walkers we met en-route made it even more enjoyable!"

Minna Harshbarger

Destination Specialist (Ask Minna to organise your TMB!)

"It's the challenge. TMB is a great one. The best trip is you can do if you want to challenge yourself whilst walking in the Alps and through 3 different countries."

Neil Lapping

Chief Adventure Officer I'd been planning to do the Tour du Mont Blanc for years, and finally got the chance in 2012. Here are 5 reasons it exceeded my every expectation:

1. The People

An iconic trek like the TMB attracts people from all over the world and the great news is that they all share your passion. I know it’s a cliché but the people you meet really do make the trip. We shared tables, picnic spots and many miles of the trail in conversation and laughter with so many wonderful people from all over the world. The stand outs are: the hyperactive Texan girl practically “running” the trail and absolutely bursting with life, the French accountant who turned out to be a postwoman, Gail and Jill, two Canadian “oldies” enjoying a second youth exploring Europe’s great trails on foot, the warm Swiss hosts at Bon Abri in Champex who fed us to within an inch of exploding and the Nepali waiters at Lac Blanc.

2. The Food

How do you make one delicious omelette that feeds twelve? To find out you will have to ask the chef at Chalet de Miage. Each day held a new surprise. Delicious charcuterie and local cheese, the finest almond croissant from an artisan bakery, delicious Italian coffee in Courmayeur, an enormous serving of freshly made lasagne in Champex and then a final treat of tartiflette and raclette in Chamonix.

Lunch at Lac Blanc

3. The Views

Let me leave it to the 19th Century French novelist George Sands: “The contemplation of Mont Blanc’s unchanging summits for three or four days last month, the sight of that eternal snow, immaculate, sublime in its whiteness and calm, was enough to restore to my soul a serenity it had not known for a long time.” - George Sand, Lettres d’un Voyageur

4. The Walking

Views like this accompany you around the circuit.

The simple act of following the Tour du Mont Blanc each day from town to refuge to village to town rewards you with a sense of accomplishment. Climb in the morning, cross the col at lunchtime, descend in the afternoon. It is immensely satisfying.

5. Chamonix

The hustle, bustle and palpable sense of expectation. A mecca for the walker, mountaineer and adventurer Chamonix shakes you back to reality at the end of your TMB. What better way to celebrate the end of your trip than with a cold beer on the Rue du Paccard planning your next adventure?
