When is the Best Time to Visit Provence?
The best seasons are spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) when the weather is warm but comfortable, perfect for walking holidays in Provence or leisurely cycling tours.
July and August bring lavender in full bloom and lively village festivals, but also the heat, crowds, and the risk of wildfires in certain areas, so we limit our hiking trip options in midsummer, though our Provence bike tours are still a great option for those who prefer exploring from the saddle.
For cooler evenings and quieter trails, late spring and early autumn are the sweet spots.

Must Try Food from Provence
Provençal cuisine is all about simple ingredients packed with sunshine and flavor. Expect fresh vegetables, olive oil, herbs like thyme and rosemary, and seafood along the coast. Local favorites include:
- Ratatouille – the region’s famous vegetable stew
- Bouillabaisse – a fragrant fish soup from Marseille
- Tapenade – a rich olive spread perfect on crusty bread
- Goat cheese drizzled with honey – often from local farms
And of course, the drinks are just as important.
Sip a crisp Côtes de Provence rosé, a bold red from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, or a splash of pastis, the anise-flavored aperitif that says “Provence” in a single sip. Learn more in our Food & Drink of Provence Blog.

Artists in Provence
It’s easy to see why so many great artists fell in love with Provence — the golden light, the vibrant colors, and the rolling landscapes have inspired some of the world’s greatest painters.
Paul Cézanne, born in Aix-en-Provence, returned home after years abroad to capture the landscapes he loved — scenes that later drew Picasso to the region. Vincent van Gogh also found his muse here, creating more than 350 works during his time in Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, including the legendary Starry Night.
Today, you can follow in their footsteps. Visit Cézanne’s studio in Aix, stroll through Van Gogh’s favorite spots in Arles, or explore guided art trails that bring their masterpieces to life. Provence isn’t just a place to see — it’s a place to feel, to paint, and to be inspired.
