Cycle and sail the lagoons, lakes and reed islands of Romania’s wildlife rich Danube Delta, one of Europe’s last untouched corners of wilderness. In the company of Delta Cormorants and Great White Egrets, journey from the town of Tulcea to ’Mile 0’ where the Danube empties into the Black Sea. Exceeded only by the Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos Archipelago, the Delta is the worlds third largest region of biodiversity and is a sanctuary for over 300 species of birdlife. Guided by a local wildlife expert, this journey will uncover the flora, fauna and Romanian folklore of this vast UNESCO wetland.

What To Expect

This boat & bike tour is well-suited to those who want to cycle short distances on quiet country lanes and tracks but don’t mind the odd hill now and again. Each day, the guide will accompany you during your exploration of the region. At the end of each cycling day you'll hop back on-board your boat for dinner with your fellow cyclists. There’s also the option to relax on deck and admire the wildlife should you wish to have a day off the bike.

Activity Level & Terrain

Although almost completely flat this cycle tour is graded easy to moderate as the daily distance ranges from 23 - 50km. You will be cycling on dedicated cycle paths, country lanes, and some straightforward unpaved roads or trails. This tour is particularly well suited to couples and novice to moderate cyclists.

Navigation

Day rides on this trip will be guided by your onboard tour leader and wildlife guide. With our experienced local wildlife and bike-guides, you learn to recognize birds by their noise or in-flight discover rare plants and animals, about the life of the Delta residents. Your tour guide will also give you a briefing each evening or in the morning about the day's cycle. If you would prefer to have a day off the bike, there is always plenty of space for you onboard to relax and take in the Danube from the sundeck. 

Accommodations

The Dragonul: The Dragonul is formed of 3 boats; a towing raft for bicycle storage, a smaller boat that will navigate the tributaries and canals of the Danube when on exploration and the main vessel which will be your floating hotel for first 5 nights of your trip. Comprising of the sundeck, an air-conditioned restaurant and bar there is plenty of space to relax and observe the flora and fauna from the comfort of the boat. All cabins are en-suite although please note that there is no air conditioning in the cabins, the nights on the water do cool down and all cabins have opening windows.

Tulcea Guesthouse
For the last 2 nights of the trip, you will stay in a family-run guesthouse based in Tulcea. Rooms are based on 2 people sharing with en-suite facilities. Your hosts provide hearty home-cooked food and an insight into Romanian traditions, folklore and family life.

When To Go

This tour is available on set departures from April to October. Prices vary depending on the season. If you have a specific date in mind, we suggest booking as early as possible. Should your travel dates be flexible, April, May and September are slightly cooler months with temperatures ranging from 15-20°C, where June, July and August temperatures can hit up to 30°C. Due to the biodiversity is rich throughout the sailing season and with over 300 bird species resident in the Danube Delta is a wildlife enthusiast paradise.

Getting to the Start

Getting to and from Bucharest:

By Air: Bucharest Henry Coanda (Otopeni) Airport is served by most major scheduled and low-cost airlines including British Airways, Austrian Airways, EasyJet and RyanAir.

By Rail: If you would like to combine this with another Danube Bike & Boat trip, it is possible to take an overnight train from Budapest to Bucharest. Trainline Europe has details of schedules and ticket prices. Depending on your day of travel there is an early evening sleeper service from Budapest, arriving into Bucharest early lunchtime the following day.

On day 1 a single timed group transfer will depart Bucharest Henry Coanda Airport to Tulcea at 2 pm. On day 8 of the itinerary, a transfer from Tulcea will arrive at the airport at approximately 1 pm.

Equipment

Bike Rental: 21-speed unisex hybrid bikes are included in the cost of your trip. All bikes are equipped with mudguards, comfort gel saddle, and anti-puncture tires. E-Bikes are not available.

Travel Insurance
