Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive PassauWillkommen! Your Danube cycling tour starts in Passau, a traditional Bavarian city on the border with Austria also known as the "City of Three Rivers".
If you have time to spare before collecting your rented bike (before 4:00 PM) there are a lot of sights to explore. Passau's old town was created by Italian baroque masters in the 17th century and reveals soaring towers, picturesque palaces, promenades, and romantic cobbled lanes. Don't miss the iconic St Stephen's Cathedral which boasts the world’s largest cathedral organ.
Passau has direct train connections to Salzburg, Munich (2h30m), and Vienna (3h30m), which are the most convenient airports.Â
Hotel Residenz is a tastefully decorated 4-star hotel in Passau with a beautiful terrace overlooking the Danube. Ideally located in the heart of the old town the iconic St Stephen's Cathedral is only around the corner.
If you arrive late on your first day, it is possible to collect your rented bike before setting off on your first ride.
Cycle through quiet woodland and along the shores of the scenic Danube enjoying the peaceful surroundings and the fresh air. Visit the impressive Trappist monastery at Engelhartszell, where the homemade liqueurs boast "special healing powers". Next up is the Donauschlinge or "Danube Loop" where the river makes a dramatic bend of 180 degrees, a memorable view and one of the highlights of this trip.
Ascent/Descent: +9m/-27m
A beautiful 4* hotel located directly on the Danube Trail. Traditional but with all modern amenities, you will be sure of a wonderful stay at the Hotel Donauschlinge.
You’ll leave the impressive "Danube Loop" behind and continue cycling along the easy-going route through the fertile and picturesque Eferdinger basin. The valley is wider here and you’ll pass numerous ferries and boats as they sail the Danube while you go by pedal power. Today's destination is Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, where you can make the most of a summer’s evening with a stroll through the enchanting old town. Celebrate your arrival with a portion of Kaiserschmarrn, sweet fluffy pancakes made with rum-soaked raisins and sprinkled with powdered sugar.Â
Ascent/Descent:Â +33m/-56m
Hotel Schillerpark is a 4-star hotel in the centre of Linz, a short walk from the main square, local bars, and restaurants. Rooms are tastefully decorated and you will enjoy a restful sleep in your comfortable en suite room.
Enjoy an energising breakfast before setting off on your next ride to Grein. Cycle through a soft landscape with green meadows and small towns and villages such as Enns, the oldest town in Austria. Visit its main square which features a huge tower (60 meters!) dating back to the 16th century. Further along, you will pass the Celtic village of Mitterkirchen, the majestic church of Baumgartenberg, and the romantic castle of Clam. The final destination today is Grein, which is home to Austria's oldest city theatre and Grein Castle.Â
Ascent/Descent:Â +12m/-34m
Aumühle in Grein is a comfortable 4-star hotel with wellness facilities including a sauna, steam baths, hot tub, solarium, and several relaxation areas. This is the perfect place to unwind after a day in the outdoors!
Discover remarkable scenery in a landscape that is known for its diversity. Pass densely wooded areas and rock formations on both sides of the Danube as you pedal along the cycle path. The narrow Strudengau valley gives way to a wider landscape from the attractive town of Persenbeug, and then to the Wachau Valley, which is characterized by terraced vineyards and fruit orchards. At Melk, you will revel in the sight of a gorgeous baroque Benedictine monastery which can be seen from afar.
Ascent/Descent:Â +22m/-47m
Ideally located in the historic heart of Melk, the 4-star Hotel Zur Post has comfortable en suite bedrooms that have been tastefully decorated. The on-site restaurant serves regional food specialties paired with incredible local beer and wine.
More delights are in-store today in the beautiful Wachau Valley, an area that is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will rarely be without the sight of a castle, palace, or monastery as you follow the route in direction of Krems. Stop off at the pretty wine-making villages of Spitz, Weissenkirchen, and finally the cobbled streets of Durnstein.
If there’s one thing you don't want to miss, it’s popping into one of the quaint taverns to sample a glass or two of the local Grüner Veltliner or Riesling. Don't forget the homemade apricot delicacies on offer from the local farmers, such as fruity apricot jam, sweet apricot cake, or take home some warming apricot schnapps!
Ascent/Descent:Â +20m/-37m
Schloss Dürnstein is a 5-star castle hotel located in Dürnstein in the heart of the Wachau Valley. Built in 1630, the hotel combines the elegance of a historic castle with modern comfort and facilities. Enjoy the on-site restaurant with its beautiful terrace overlooking the river, the rolling hills, and the surrounding vineyards.
Leave the vineyards behind as you head to the romantic town of Tulln, famed for its beautiful market gardens and Art Nouveau painter Egon Schiele. From here you can take a direct train to Vienna, the "City Of Music". The Austrian capital is filled with imperial architecture, world-class museums, and musical masterpieces. The local 'coffee-house' culture is a real treat, pop into one of the cafes and sample freshly baked cakes with your hot drink and watch the world go by. Settle into your comfortable, centrally located hotel and explore Vienna's elegant dining scene at night.Â
Alternatively, you could cycle into Vienna instead of taking the train and visit the impressive Stift Klösterneuburg Monastery along the way, adding 30km to your total distance.
Dürnstein to Tulln, train to Vienna: 50km/31mi (Ascent/Descent: +17m/-57m)
Dürnstein to Vienna: 80km/50mi (Ascent/Descent: +31m/-84m)
Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof is a 5-star hotel located in the historic heart of Vienna, just a few minutes away from Hofburg Palace. The elegant interior design is the perfect mix of traditional touches and modernity. Unwind in the comfortable en suite rooms and enjoy its ideal central location close to local bars and restaurants.
After breakfast, your cycling trip along the Danube comes to an end. We would highly recommend booking an extra night in this incredible city to visit its major attractions. We have included a train ticket in First Class from Vienna back to Passau so you can unwind in comfort after a great trip!

The minimum age for this tour is: 5 Years
This cycling holiday is graded easy due to the daily rides following mostly flat, paved and largely traffic-free cycle paths, always along the riverbank. The grade is determined on the basis of the entire trip. Individual days may vary in terms of difficulty, i.e. some rides may be slightly more difficult or easier than the overall grade. The Danube Cycle Path between Passau and Vienna is a dedicated, paved and well-marked route, with a slight descent as you follow the river, and no technical challenges. This is what makes it slightly easier than our Vienna to Budapest tour, which involves back and side roads as well as the cycle path.Â
This cycling tour is suitable for beginners on their first cycling holiday, or for those who wish to take it easy with plenty of time to explore along the way. The length of the daily rides varies between 32-61 km and the difference in daily elevation gain/loss lies between +9m/+33m and -27m/-57m. On the final stage to Vienna, we opt for the easier alternative which is cycling to Tulln and getting a train to Vienna from there. To fully enjoy the Danube experience, we recommend doing some rides before you depart, whether it's commuting to work or heading out for some leisurely rides at the weekend.
The choice of accommodation on this trip is truly special. The hotels are full of character and are centrally located in the towns of villages along the Blue Danube. You'll stay in a mixture of 4 and 5-star hotels, wellness hotels, and countryside resorts. Please view the itinerary for more details. Please note that the hotels mentioned in the itinerary are subject to availability, and early booking is highly recommended for June-September as this is a very popular time of year.
If you're cycling with friends or family and prefer to have your own room, single rooms are available subject to a supplementary payment. We also welcome solo cyclists on this trip.Â
Twin room requests:Â in Austria, 95% of all hotel rooms are double rooms (with one large bed). Twin with separate beds are more than unusual and therefore a room with a double bed alongside a sofa bed is sometimes provided.
Please note that for the Danube, exact accommodation cannot be confirmed until 2-3 weeks prior departure.
Meals
All breakfasts are included and in Austria Frühstück typically includes bread, rolls, cold cuts, cheese, eggs, fresh fruit, pastries, and muesli. There is always a plentiful supply of tea and coffee and orange juice.
Dinner is not included so you are free to choose from the available options each night. Staying in central locations means that you are never far from local restaurants and bars. One of the highlights of this trip is the fantastic food and drink of the regions that you cycle through. Some of our favourites include; a traditional Wiener Schnitzel with a potato salad, a hearty bowl of Goulash, a refreshing cold glass of Grüner Veltliner, and a slice of Sacher-Torte with a cup of tea or coffee.
Should you have any special dietary requirements please let us know. We try to accommodate all requirements where possible.

This trip is available to start on any day between the beginning of April and late October.
The weather along the Danube varies depending on the region and the season, but typically the summers are warm and the winters very cold. April/May and September/October are usually most pleasant for cycling with temperatures around 15-20 degrees (60-65°F). Evenings can be much cooler so do take a warm layer or two and expect the odd rain shower. June, July, and August are beautifully warm and sunny and although it doesn't often get unbearably hot, there may be some exceptional days where the temperatures soar in excess of 30 degrees (100°F). With longer daylight hours, you may like to plan your day to avoid cycling in the midday heat or taking a longer lunch. We always recommend taking plenty of fluids and sun protection with you, even on cloudy days.
Regardless of the month, there is always a chance of a rain shower or thunderstorm (especially after a prolonged spell of heat). Always be prepared for all eventualities and pack waterproofs and check the weather forecast before setting off.
Please note that due to popular demand we aim to get your personalised itinerary with hotel confirmations to you 3 to 4 weeks prior to departure. There may be a slight delay in receiving your personalised information when booking last-minute or during the high season.
