Activity Level & Terrain
This route is graded easy to moderate overall. On the walk from Eyemouth to Berwick-upon-Tweed there is a fair amount of elevation gain and loss, but nothing too strenuous. Daily walking distances vary between 5 - 15 miles. A good level of fitness will be required. On most days the average is 13 miles with one exception. When you walk from St Abbs/Coldingham to Eyemouth this walk is only 5 miles. This is due to lack of accommodation in one area. Even though the walking day is short it gives the opportunity to explore the local area. You will mostly be walking on coastal trails, sometimes on sandy beaches and along cliff tops. You will need to be careful not to walk too close to the cliff edges.

The start of the tour in Dunbar is easily accessible from Edinburgh by train. They run approximately every hour and the journey time is around 30 minutes. You can find more information at the Scotrail website. There are various airlines that fly into Edinburgh from international gateways and more information may be found on the Edinburgh Airport website. This airport is a 30 minute taxi to the city centre, which is also easily reachable using the Tram or Citylink bus networks.
You could also drive and leave your car in Dunbar as there are plenty of car parks.
Getting from the End
Berwick-upon-Tweed is on the East Coast Main Railway Line. The train operator for this line is the London North Eastern Rail. The trains run up and down the east coast of England and Scotland from London to Edinburgh and vice-versa. You can take a train back to Edinburgh. Trains run approximately every hour and the journey takes around 50 minutes. You can also take the same trainline south to Newcastle. This journey is a bit shorter an d the trains run slightly more often. As stated London is also accessible. You can take direct trains, or via York. The journey time is 3H40.
If you have driven to Dunbar and parked your car there, you can take the Edinburgh train back there on the same trainline, which takes approximately 20 minutes. These trains do not run as often however, so you will need to refer to the website above for times and schedules.
Luggage Transfer
Your bags will be transferred from your accommodation as per your itinerary and moved onto your next overnight accommodation. We ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to 20kg per person.
At Macs Adventure, we work in partnership with many luggage transfer providers who set a limit on how many bags/suitcases they will transfer per person, and also the weight of the bag/suitcase. Your booking includes transfer of 1 bag per person. It is very important that you read the luggage information specific to your tour before departure. If you do not adhere to these limits, there is a great possibility that you will be charged locally both for extra bags or if they are too heavy. This limitation can be a challenge, especially as airlines generally have limits that are higher. However, our luggage providers have reasons for these limits (usually due to the Health and Safety of their employees), which we must respect.
