Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park is rich with geological heritage with massive peaks, deep valleys, and glacial lakes that have been carved out over the past two million years.

Activity Level & Terrain

This walk is graded moderate with different options to choose from on most days. You can expect trails with rocks, exposed tree roots, wet and muddy sections along with several sections of boardwalk. For those wishing to do summit walks, there are several steep climbs and descents.

Navigation

As this is a self-guided walk you will be responsible for navigation, decision making and safety during your trip. You should be able to navigate easily with a map and compass. We supply you with route notes for the recommended routes, as well as access to our smartphone navigation app along with GPX tracks, so you will have no problem following the route each day. 

Accommodations

Overnight in hand-selected accommodations specifically chosen to ensure that you enjoy every minute of your stay. They all offer a warm welcome to walkers and traditional hospitality. Your first three nights will be spent at the award-winning Lake St Clair Lodge and the final two nights will be enjoyed at Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge.

Single sleeping arrangements can be organized but please note this trip is not available to solo travelers.

When To Go

The trip is available from early October to early April. The seasons can be unpredictable in Tasmania with snow lingering into early summer. 

Weather and Climate

The warm and dry season lasts from December to March in the southern hemisphere, with an average daily high temperature of 22 degrees Celcius / 71 degrees Fahrenheit.

Getting to the Start

By Air: Launceston Airport is your best option for arriving in Tasmania. We will pick you up in Launceston and transfer you on day 1. 

Getting from the End

By Air: Launceston Airport is your best option for departing from Tasmania. We will drop you off in Launceston at the end of your trip on day 6. 

Luggage Transfer

Your bags will be transferred with you on the drive from Lake St Clair to Cradle Mountain.

Travel Insurance
