  • Explore the ancient Etruscan village of Sutri and its Roman amphitheatre

Embark on a historical journey following ancient Roman trails through unspoiled Etruscan landscapes. Every step of the route is filled with reflections of the past, such as the fortified city of Viterbo, the necropolis and Roman amphitheater in Sutri, the medieval churches of Campagnano, and the archaeological site of Veii, with the impressive remains of an old Etruscan city. This trip takes you through almost unknown parts of Umbria and Lazio where you will have the trail mostly to yourself. Visit friendly villages with medieval squares where aromatic espressos are served with freshly baked pastries. Set off along the dark cobbled streets of the “Via Appia Antica” and take a moment to take in the views from Monte Mario before reaching Rome.
This classic, historical journey is ideal for regular walkers that are looking to combine moderate walks with culture. One of the highlights of this trip are the ancient villages, tombs, churches and cathedrals that you visit along the way. Walking this route is like stepping back in time with unspoiled landscapes at every turn. The trails along the last section of the Via Francigena are well waymarked making it easy to find your way to Rome! Furthermore, this trip is suitable for children aged 12+, solo walkers, and small groups.

Activity Level & Terrain

This walking trip is graded moderate overall. The daily distances range from 17 to 28.5 km and the terrain can be described as relatively flat with minimal elevation gains and losses. Depending on your fitness level and preferred distance it is possible to shorten the longest day of 28.5 km (Sutri - Campagnano di Roma) by starting in Monterosi and reducing the total distance by roughly 5km. Please view the itinerary for more details. It should also be noted that there are a couple of times when you have to cross streams, which can be easy or quite difficult depending on the flow and whether there has been any rain. This walking holiday is ideal for regular walkers with a good level of fitness or beginners looking for a challenge.

We always advise you to set off early especially during summer to avoid the heat of the day and to allow plenty of time for small breaks to reach your next location.

As this route tries to remain as true to the original pilgrimage route as possible, you will not only walk on trails and unpaved roads but also on asphalt part of the way. The ‘traditional’ walk is alongside some busy main roads, which is why we give other suggestions (especially near Rome). Please take care when walking along roads and always be mindful of other road users. Pavements or paths should be used if provided and walk on the right-hand side of the road if there is no pavement or path. This way you can see oncoming traffic.

The route is partially waymarked as you are largely following the Via Francigena pilgrimage trail with official red and white signs or the yellow pilgrim. The final section of the trail into Rome is among the most popular sections and the paths are therefore known to be well maintained. To make sure that you have no problems finding your way we will be supplying you with detailed route notes, GPS tracks, and access to the Macs Adventure smartphone app. You will also have 24/7 assistance from our local partner as well as our office.

You will stay in lovely small hotels and B&Bs. We carefully select small and friendly accommodations that offer a warm welcome and great food so you enjoy every minute of your stay. Many of our walkers choose to add extra nights along the walk to sample more of the wonderful walking and attractions available in Umbria and Lazio. If you choose to extend your holiday we would recommend spending extra nights in Orvieto or Rome.

Single Rooms

This independent walking holiday is available to solo walkers. If you require single rooms for your booking party we will try our best to accommodate your request, subject to availability.

Most of your accommodations will more than happy to provide a packed lunch on request and this can be booked on arrival. Getting to the start of this trip in Orvieto is easy. The most convenient airport to fly into would be Rome which has 2 airports; Leonardo da Vinci Airport at Fiumicino is served by major airlines including international ones or Ciampino Airport, which is mainly used by low-cost carriers, such as Ryanair and Easyjet. It is most convenient to fly into Fiumicino and take a train directly from the airport to Orvieto, via Roma Tiburtina (2hr).

Getting from the End

As your Italian adventure ends in Rome, you can simply return to the airport by public transport.

Luggage Transfer

Enjoy the ease of walking with a light backpack and having your main luggage moved for you each day. Your bags will be collected from your accommodation and moved onto your next overnight accommodation. We ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to 20kg per person.
