Activity Level & Terrain
This walking trip is graded moderate overall. The daily distances range from 17 to 28.5 km and the terrain can be described as relatively flat with minimal elevation gains and losses. Depending on your fitness level and preferred distance it is possible to shorten the longest day of 28.5 km (Sutri - Campagnano di Roma) by starting in Monterosi and reducing the total distance by roughly 5km. Please view the itinerary for more details. It should also be noted that there are a couple of times when you have to cross streams, which can be easy or quite difficult depending on the flow and whether there has been any rain. This walking holiday is ideal for regular walkers with a good level of fitness or beginners looking for a challenge.
We always advise you to set off early especially during summer to avoid the heat of the day and to allow plenty of time for small breaks to reach your next location.
As this route tries to remain as true to the original pilgrimage route as possible, you will not only walk on trails and unpaved roads but also on asphalt part of the way. The ‘traditional’ walk is alongside some busy main roads, which is why we give other suggestions (especially near Rome). Please take care when walking along roads and always be mindful of other road users. Pavements or paths should be used if provided and walk on the right-hand side of the road if there is no pavement or path. This way you can see oncoming traffic.
Navigation
The route is partially waymarked as you are largely following the Via Francigena pilgrimage trail with official red and white signs or the yellow pilgrim. The final section of the trail into Rome is among the most popular sections and the paths are therefore known to be well maintained. To make sure that you have no problems finding your way we will be supplying you with detailed route notes, GPS tracks, and access to the Macs Adventure smartphone app. You will also have 24/7 assistance from our local partner as well as our office.
Accommodations
You will stay in lovely small hotels and B&Bs. We carefully select small and friendly accommodations that offer a warm welcome and great food so you enjoy every minute of your stay. Many of our walkers choose to add extra nights along the walk to sample more of the wonderful walking and attractions available in Umbria and Lazio. If you choose to extend your holiday we would recommend spending extra nights in Orvieto or Rome.
Single Rooms
This independent walking holiday is available to solo walkers. If you require single rooms for your booking party we will try our best to accommodate your request, subject to availability.

It is most convenient to fly into Fiumicino and take a train directly from the airport to Orvieto, via Roma Tiburtina (2hr).
