  • Mediterranean Tours: FAQs

What are the best Mediterranean tours for first-time hikers?
If you’re new to walking holidays, look at Relaxed Trails of the Cinque Terre, Walking on Corfu, Walking in Catalonia, Loire Valley: The Châteaux Trail, or Provence: Villages & Vineyards. These offer shorter daily distances, well-marked trails and plenty of café and swim stops along the way.

What is the best time of year to hike in Croatia?
For Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast and islands, we usually recommend late April to June and September to mid-October. Expect warm days, swimmable water and fewer crowds compared to July and August. July - August still works if you’re comfortable with heat and plan earlier starts – we can help tweak your itinerary to suit.

Which Mediterranean bike tours are best for beginners?
For a first Mediterranean bike tour, consider Cycle the Châteaux of the Loire, Cycling the Canal du Midi, Cycling in Catalonia, Loire River Cycle Path Orléans to Chinon, or Cycling Slovenia: Ljubljana to the Adriatic. These focus on dedicated bike paths or quiet roads, manageable daily distances and mostly gentle terrain.

Do you offer luxury Mediterranean tour packages?
Yes. Our “in Style” and “Comfort” trips - such as Classic Provence in Style, The Amalfi Coast in Comfort, Cycle the Loire in Style and Walking the Catalan Coast in Style – feature upgraded boutique hotels, some premium transfers and special touches, while still keeping the feel of a self-guided adventure.

    Are Macs Adventure trips guided?
Our core product is self-guided walking tours and cycling tours. That means no group, no fixed departure bus and no trip leader – just you, your travel companions and our detailed support. We arrange your accommodations, luggage transfers, route information and on-the-ground support, so your Mediterranean adventure feels independent yet seamless.

    Mediterranean Tours: FAQs
  • When is the best time for a Mediterranean Walking or Cycling tour?

Spring (March - May) – Ideal for most Mediterranean walking tours. Wildflowers on the Amalfi Coast, comfortable temps in Provence and Tuscany, great conditions in Croatia and Greece. May is especially popular, so plan ahead for the best accommodations and flight options.

Summer (June - August) – Long days and lively coastal towns. Great for island-based Mediterranean holidays, Balearic Islands tours and coastal routes like the Dalmatian Coast or Canal du Midi. We’ll help you start earlier in the day, build in swim stops and choose routes with shade where possible.

Autumn (September - November) – A favourite for many of our experts. September and early October bring warm seas, harvest season in Chianti, Rioja and Bordeaux, and quieter trails. November is shoulder season – lovely in parts of Spain, Cyprus and Turkey, with more availability and value.

Winter (December - February) – True winter walking in the Alps and higher mountains, but mild walking is still possible in selected regions such as Cyprus, Malta & Gozo and southern Spain. These make great Mediterranean winter vacations if you prefer cool hiking and fewer visitors.

When is the best time for a Mediterranean Walking or Cycling tour?
  • The Best of the Mediterranean

Discover the best Mediterranean family holiday
Mediterranean holidays for families with teens work brilliantly on relaxed coastal routes and bike paths – think Loire châteaux, Catalonia’s greenways, the Dalmatian Coast or Mallorca. Choose shorter daily distances, extra nights in favourite stops and family-friendly guesthouses. Teens love island-hopping adventures and bike tours.

Discover the best Mediterranean islands for holidays
For island-focused Mediterranean holidays, look to the Greek Cyclades, Corfu, Mallorca and Gozo. May, June and September balance beach weather with quieter trails and better availability. July and August are lively and hot – great for short walks. Shoulder-season trips often coincide with local festivals, harvests and more time to chat with the locals.

Discover the best Mediterranean tours for couples
Mediterranean tours for couples are all about slow mornings, scenic days and special evenings – think Amalfi Coast in Comfort, Classic Provence in Style, Catalan Coast in Style or Cycle the Loire in Style. For romance without crowds, we love May, early June and late September. Expect pleasant temps, softer light for photos and easier dinner reservations in those must-try restaurants.

    The Best of the Mediterranean
  • Self-Guided VS Guided Mediterranean Tours

Many travellers start out searching for guided Mediterranean tours, then realize they actually want more freedom. Our self-guided approach gives you that flexibility without the stress of organising every detail.

On routes like Relaxed Trails of the Cinque Terre, The Amalfi Coast in Comfort or Walking the Greek Cyclades, you follow clearly waymarked trails with our award winning turn-by-turn app, daily notes and local tips. There’s no guide setting the pace or group you have to keep up with – you choose when to start, when to swim, when to stop for a long lunch. If you ever need help, our team is just a call away.

For travellers who’ve only ever been on guided group trips, self-guided can feel like a big step. That’s where our experience comes in – we’ve walked and biked these routes ourselves, chosen the overnight stops and built in the right level of challenge, transfers and back-up so you can enjoy the adventure, not worry about logistics.
